Did you know?

If all of Delhi's vechicles were lined up, the convoy would reach New York!

As per the statistics, there are 5,036,842 registered motor vechicles till the end of Oct this year.

That's pretty cool. So I guess in some way you wouldn't need an aeroplane to get to New York. Hmmmmm?

And same article further says, that if all Delhi vehicles are lined from the equator, the line could go beyond either of the poles

So, now you know what to do if you want to visit either poles, just line em up

I remember reading few years ago that Delhi was supposed to have as many vehicles as Mumbai, Calcutta and Chennai combined.

How come Delhi has so many vehicles, when it's not the biggest city? Lack of public transport, or what?

Its the 6th largest city in the world, big enough, moreso, it also has the largest fleet of public transport busses running on clean fuel(CNG) in the world, these number more than 5,000, auto's, taxi's, metro etc are other mode of public transport.

But it is smaller than Mumbai, and only twice the size of Chennai ---based on a quick google for population figures, so could be wildly wrong.

My opinion? Combination of these factors:

-a sprawling city of large distances. Also, as an example, Mumbai is mainly north south, Delhi is mainly radial. Therefore, distances travelled by an average family regularly are in many directions and are larger
-poor public transport. (has the metro changed this?). eg, the same guy who uses local trains to go to work in Mumbai will drive in Delhi.
-higher level of conspicious consumption than say chennai or kolkata, or even Mumbai. Specially in these days of easily available loans, a lot more people can get a car even if they can't really afford it.
-better or wider roads than most cities.
-and, now, the fact that satellite towns of gurgaon and noida have very poor connectivity to Delhi by taxis or autos.
-climate. winters are specially are not too conducive on two wheelers. specially with small children. more cars.
-people sometimes buy a two wheeler AND a car. 2 wheelers are economical and for shorter distances, a car is for family etc

>>> The distance covered by Indian Railways a day is equal to the distance to moon & back (or some things like that...)

>>> Fruits & vegetables India wastes due to mishandling every year is the same quantity as of Great Briton's annual consumption....

..there are many such statistics like that floating around…..

Statistics is like bikini. They hide what is trivial and reveal what’s suggestive. Or is it the other way around???

True stats are backbone of any Co/economy, one tends to derive analytical insights from that, stats never lie & if interpreted correctly can offer accurate(stunning) perdictions about the shape of things to come. A case in point being the turn around of Japanese economy by an American economist called 'Deming' during the 1950's.

Just dont trvialise the stats, they can be a useful tool to get some cutting edge information, and information is power in today's world
