Talking amusement - Diu tourist office

I telephoned Diu tourist office and had a typical English guy calling Indian guy telephone call, it went something like this:-

Indian guy - hello

Me - hello is that the Diu tourist office, (long wait while they find someone who speaks English)

Hello

Hello could you tell me if I can get a boat from Diu to Mumbai?

Yes

Is it daily?

No - only Mumbai

(Whilst scratching my head, I ask) does it go every day?

Yes

What time every day?

12:00

What time does it get to Mumbai?

13:00

That’s a long time - just to confirm that’s 25 hours?

No 1 hour

(Whilst scratching my head again, I ask) are you sure?

Yes, unless you go via Porbander, then it takes long time

Porbander?

No, too long

(Now I’m pulling my hair out, but still ask foolishly) how many rupee’s?

Rs3300

(Gasping, I ask) HOW MUCH!

Rs3300

(I started to understand now, so asked) do you mean flying?

He put the phone down without answering.

Diu

H**l, I'm confused now, too . . .

I'm also hoping to go to Diu on my next trip, and maybe via Mumbai.

So, you got the "phone help" (eek!), you took the trip, and what can you tell us now, in light of your "experience?"

Please share.

diu

Hi Kath

Don’t really understand your reply, I’ve not been to Diu yet, I’m looking to go in Jan 2002,

I think when I called the dui tourist office the guy who answered thought I wanted a plane.

If you want to know details of boat between Mumbai & Diu please call them and I hope you have more luck than I did.

The number is: - 0091 2875 52653, good luck.

If you get any details on a boat could you please post it?

Thanks.

Wow you actually got through to the tourist office, I am not surprised by the service (ever try booking a hotel room). I would probably try one of the hotels they probably would be of better service.
Maybe Hotel Samrat would know, the manager there is great and knows the island in and out . There numbers are (02875) 52354, 52514, fax 52754.
I spend about a month a year in Diu and you would figure that I would know the info about the ferry.....

Mike
ps...hey if your going to Diu, make sure to check out the caves, LP doesn't talk about them but they are really cool.

hotel samrat

I contacted hotel Samrat and the manager says there is not a boat from Diu to Mumbai.

I will have a good look around in jan/02 and then post my findings.

EDIT NOTE - no boat service.

Hey Steven,
I could have swore there was a boat, however it looks like I was wrong. I will probably be in Diu about the same time as you and I will also check in on it.
