YHAI Sarpass Trek 2012
Hi..
I have some queries:
1. How many sets of cloths i should carry?
2. I'm just curious to know how do they arrange for the food? they cook in the camp every night?
3. I am coming from Bangalore, If i carry some extra stuff, can i leave it at the base camp at kasol and take it while returning back as I will be going to Delhi after the camp to spend time with my family.
thanks,
-Rohit

It depends on you. But lighter would be better.

Yes
You would be getting freshly cooked piping hot food as they cook at every camp!

You may carry for the road. But it is better to avoid storage of any food stuff in cloakroom.

Reason: Shortened long quote.
thanks again Prakaant for clarifying the doubts
i'll try to bring less clothes only, in case its more than what required, i have a option to put it back in cloakroom.
Dont worry, i wont carry any food stuff.

Back in my town after completing Sarpass SP-1 Batch..
Pls read it full or dont read..
Route has been changed..
Whole Ascent from Kasol till Sarpass has been changed , only the descent is the same
Many localites/previous trekkers feel that the earlier route was more difficult and more sceneric than this one. But still good for first timers..
Day1- Report
Day2- Acclimisation
Day3- Rappelling,Rock Climbing
Day4- To Kangchani Camp( good Camp site on either said snow peaks), hardly 3 kms trek
By this time , you feel what the hell you did as a trek in last 4 days
Day5- To Khodru Thatch Camp, 3 Hrs Trek.. little ok
Day6- To Zirmi, 2 Hrs trek..
Frankly speaking , a little experienced trekker even myself, Could have walked till here instead of going to Day3 Kangchani skipping 3 base camps
Guides were killing all the day with tea breaks, lunch breaks just to make it full day to make a 2 hr walk.. I really felt this trekking is not hard at all.
Day7- To Tilang Lotni, 9-11 hrs of walk.. A great day for me as I touch the snow, the trek was quite difficult, little long... No much breaks in between..
Advice you to try skiing on your foots with the help of some localite.. Snow should be hard and nice on the surface to try this..
Camp site is located almost on the peak with snow everywhere. Expect Gulab Jamoon on this 12,000 peak
Day8- to Bhandak Thatch.. 10-12 hrs of walk.. A day to cross Sarpass, all mountain peaks, Difficult stretch on all the days.. cross valleys.. a day full of snow.. some slides on snow .. 3-4 fts of snow at certain places.. A challenging day atlast.. Enjoyed the most of it though quite tough
(
This could be the day that can be challenge/nightmare for any trekker in Sarpass. We had full sunshine, so it looked easy. If you're stuck in snowfall, you may enjoy first the few mins, then you start scratching as you start feeling cold, low temp in your body.. Carry RainCovers/Coat.. some extra Gloves. This day can be really hard if you dont have enuf energy, good clothes. Carry a dryer it might save you if it is too harsh. I am little exaggerating here to be prepared though it was easy for us with sunshine on the whole day)
Day9 - To Biskeri Thatch.. A little long stretch, not as much it was in the two previous days, You start to move out of the snow.. You almost walk through the beautiful sceneric forest ending up in a Mini-Switzerland..
We witnessed Snow-Storm here for some 15 mins... It was just looked like pearls spreaded over everywhere... It was great fun
Day10- Back to Kasol, a 3-4 hrs walk.. plus 1 hr of travel in bus.. you can get down at manikiran
I was not there on Day11.. THE END
YHAI had ensured that all of us are properly accliamised to the climate by keeping the first 5 days keeping many nearby Camps for simple stretch. It is not just walking, trekking in Himalayas, you need to think a lot about your body to raise even a 1000 ft. They might have reduced the total trek little short than the earlier but equally good..
Dont take woodland shoes.. its heavy
Hunter shoes are good..
Quecha from Decathlon is water proof.. It will help for sure
I just trekked in a sport shoe,Kalenji from decathlon worth 700Rs.. You dont need any specialised shoes for this trek.. you can manage in any shoe(Tie a polythene cover over your socks when you are snow, carry some extra polythenes)
All 34 from SP-1 batch did it finally with 67 year old man, 50 year old woman. A great inspirational start for Sarpass 2012

And yeah....don't spoil the nature by garbage around. Carry all the trash back with you and let the mountains remain clean.

Congratulations! Good to know some updates finally!I am going for SP-30 batch. As i understand, you were supposed to go via garm pani - fual pani - zirmi route, but that route has been changed. I am supposed to go via grahan - padari - nagaru. Do you know whether my route has been changed too? considering it is 30 days after your batch, they might keep it unchanged (second route as it is) to reduce the environmental load and effects on only one route?

i hate this...i so much want to see Grahan, Padri, Nagaru camp sites. I hope they stick to the old route for later date batches. I seriously feel that 60 people trekking on the same route every day for 33 days will create a lot of environmental load and damage. It will be almost 2000 people walking on same path in 33 days! it will be a bad plan environmentally from YHAI part if they intend to have only one route for all 33 days. like SP1 harsha7 says the route has been changed due to heavy snow fall at Nagaru and Village issues at other camp sites. All in all YHAI has done good arrangement's for the changed route. All 47 from SP3 completed the trek without any issues. Go and have fun!

Hi Krits,Are you from SP3? when we were getting down from Sarpass, we observed snowstorm.. so you might have experienced snow? IS it.. Even the next day there was rain.. The whole Himalayan view was covered with fog from the bottom.. How was your experience from Zirmi - TilangLotni-Bhandak Thatch? Pls Update on SP2 too if you know

WindChariot...Man Its too big place .. Nobody can damage anything to the environment.. YHAI would feel more secure and safe to take the people in tested and proved routes.. They pay close to 25 rs per kg , Imagini the cost incured to carry 6-8tents.. 100+ blankets, sleeping bags,Mats.. Cooking Vessels.. Lot more to setup a camp
