Hello folks,
I seem to be in a bit of a pickle and would appreciate all the help I could get. I've been pouring over my Lonely Planet and seem to be going around in circles. Right now I am in McLeod Ganj and was planning to go to Jammu and then Srinagar but most of the people I talk to tell me to wait until the elections are over before I venture into J&K, which quite frankly is understandable but then what to do until the 15th of May? Well, I wanted to go to Kaza, Kibber, Ki and Dhankar but what route? - If I go from here to Manali then to Kaza I have Rohtang La and Kunzum La. are they open? - If I go via Manikaran to Sichling I've got the Pin-Parvati Pass which is by all accounts higher then the other two so more chances of it being closed. So how does one get to Kaza from here at the beginning of May? Also (if I ever get there) how does one get to Srinagar from there? I was told Kaza to Keylong to Srinagar, would this route be open mid May? Any help, advice, pointers would be very appreciated as right now the best option for me seems to be to chance the riots (if any) in J&K. Regards Umbreen

Hi! Easy enough. Go to Shimla(or Mandi) and from there on to Rampur and Recong Peo. From here direct bus to Kaza every morning. Kunzum La still closed,so is Rothang. Forget Pin Parvati,it's around 5300 meters high and you have to trek over it. For Srinagar now you would have to go back all the way, when Rothang is open the road through the Pattan valley should be OK.

Hi! It was going to open early this year, but it snowed again, last time only a couple of days ago(In Spiti too by the way) so it will take some more time, difficult to say when it will open.

Hiya...
Rohtang La opened for the first time in April this year... Mid-April... And then closed... As of now, its a question mark... But you can hang around in Manali and be the first one to cross it once it officially opens...! And then brag about it...! If you are already in McLeod Ganj, it doesn't really make much sense to go all the way to Shimla and then towards Rekong Peo and enter the Spiti Valley from the southern side... If the idea is to spend time, you could do it in McLeod Ganj itself or in the Kullu Valley or in Manali... Cheers...! |

Plan Change
Thank you for that but I think I may change my plan for now and go from Dharamsala to Jammu and then onto Srinagar. That should take me at least a week and a half. Now my question to anyone reading is that is it possible to go to Leh from there and then onto Kaza from around the 7th of May?
