The Dalai Lama, along with scores of other Tibetan refugees, actually stays at McLeodganj, also called Upper Dharamsala, in the beautiful Indian state of Himachal Pradesh.

McLeodganj is approx. 530 kms. from Delhi and approx. 100 kms. from Pathankot.

His Holiness (HH) the Dalai Lama has a temple residence at the end of the ridge top that is McLeod Ganj and an office in the town;

He's on tour a lot, here's a list of his steaching chedule.

Tibet.com - teachings
dalailama.com is underconstruction, but maybe not by the time you read this

If you want to meet / see HH in Mcleod there are two ways I know of;

1) Go to a public teaching - the next one planned in McLeod is

February 23 - March 9 2005 - His Holiness will teach on Tsongkhapa’s Great Stages of Path (Lamrim Chenmo).

2) Be in town when he's in his residence and keep you ears open about a public audience. The town will buzz with the news if it happens, you can't miss it. You may have to spend a hour or three cueing to register at his office, then join a large group (100+) that gets to file past him at his residence, make a prayer scarf offering and briefly shake his hand. I did this in 1998 with little knowledge of HH and still found it to be a great experience.

Actually - does this still happen? Has anyone done it recently? I guess security issues may prevent this from hapeening these days. Last time I was in McLeod was 2002 and I think it was still on then.

The teachings are still interesting, though be prepared for crowds and it may be hard to find rooms.

No, it is incredibly dangerous, particularly with all the Chinese agents lurking around after 10pm.

From me? Well, if the Dalai Lama lives there, it is probably quite safe! It is like suggesting that Scotland is dangerous because it is close to Northern Ireland.

Dharamsala is completely safe! and is not that close to kashmir and jammu. but then, what defines safety? we could slip and fall in our own bathtub water in our homes. safety is what we make it.
