What to take when visiting Shimla

I will be visiting Shimla around the second/third week of March 2006 and would like to know what I will need to take.

One person has told me that it will be cold and someone else has told me that the weather will be OK. Someone esle has told me that it will be rainy.

I am thinking that I will need to take a waterproof jacket and warm clothes. As we are not planning on doing any trekking will trainers be adequate or should I take my walking boots. As these are fairly heavy I don't really want to cart them arount if I don't need them.

Will it be warm in the hotels at night?

Is it easy to find cafe's etc during the day to get a warm drink if needed.

Thanks

We just got back from India and spent 4 days in Shimla. We were fine in a long sleeve shirt and our jackets. Thin gloves at night sometime, but that is it. And you will be fine with just your trainers. We climbed all the way up to the monkey temple in crocs and had no problems. You will be doing a ton of walking, but it isn't that bad. And the hotels should be more than fine, temperature wise.....

Getting a hot beverage is not a problem. For real coffee (whooo hooo, not nescafe!) on the mall road there is the Coffee Cooperative. Made us very happy. Think that covers it. Oh, and we had no problems with any of the street food there. It was very, very good.

Shimla will be pleasant in the second/third week of March. Possibility of small showers cannot be ruled out, but these will hardly cause any problems. And as aebp25 has suggested above, trainers will be fine.

You'll be visiting Shimla at just the right time - in spring, if I can call it as such - and well before the hordes from the plains descend on it ! There are plenty of dhabas on and around Mall road for that early morning cup of hot tea/coffee with aloo parathas and omlette !!

Enjoy yourself !
