Way to Rohtang Pass is open?

Hi,

I am planning to visit Manali during April month 2008 (second week).
I have scheduled to see Rohtang Pass from manali.
I came to know that the way to Rohtang Pass will be closed for six months (Nov-May) every year.
Is it true? or depends on the whether conditions only, the route will be closed?

Is it possible during April, we can visit Rohtang Pass?

Please advice.

Most likely there will be snow on Rothang La. You can go as far as the road will allow you to. But chances are nil that you can cross over Rohtang La in April (unless its an unusually hot summer) in a vehicle. You can of course hike if you want to.

Once the snow starts melting, the army starts clearing the snow. Jeeps/small vehicles go first and then when the passage is big enough for buses to go safely only then do they start the service.

happy travelling

Yeah, Rohtang La is the same as Rohtang Pass."La" is the Tibetan for a mountain pass, also called 'Rohtang Jot'.
"jot" is a Lahauli version of the same word.
Dont get confused,,,,,Rohtang remains Rohtang........ciao.

There is a lot of info on Manikarn on this site, just do a search or click 'Himachal Pradesh' link, before the thread's name at the top.
It's approx 85 km, 2.5 to 3 hours from Manali.

Well, 'jot' is used in other parts of HP as well - Hamta Jot, Jalori Jot.
The Lahaulis tend to use the Tibetan word - Baralacha La, Kunzum La.

generally, The pass is closed from Nov-May, However, if the winter isnt too fierce, it opens early at times.

I remember visiting Rohtang Pass on april 11th in 2003. However, Since then, I dont remember it being accessible until start of May.

I drove in a Qualis. Army generally puts a barrier at 8:30 am (I dont know if they still do!) So you'll need to start from Manali at 3 am! Reach by 5:30-6 am and then leave by 8 am to cross the barrier in time. Plz ask locals before you travel from manali to rohtang.

Thanks for the info.

The way to rohtang pass closed means, will it be closed from manali itself or from the snow area, it will be closed (so that we reach till the snow area).

Please reply..

You would be able to go till the point where snow is blocking the road.
