To begin with, many years ago, yes, but as we covered hundreds, and then thousands of miles in the Himalayas, without ending up in a river at the bottom of a gorge, I think we forgot to worry.

One is always a potential statistic, a headline in the local newspaper, travelling roads like these, but there is no point dwelling on it. Best to accept that one cannot control any number of factors when making a journey through these precipitious landscapes, and just relax and enjoy the ride.
What a long strange trip it's been!

In my 2 times in the Kumaon region of the Himalayas I always rode on the top of the bus. They would always tell me to come down as you could not ride up there. But I always told them that I rode from here to there on top and would just ignore them until they gave up. I was never going to come down as I knew they would eventually give up.It's the safest place in my opinion. If the bus were to go down the ravine, then there's a good possibility you could just jump off in time and survive. Plus the views are amazing from up there. But you must keep your eyes open as there are many low branches. Plus you can stetch out and relax if you like. I remember 1 trip from Almora to Nainital when there were all these boy who went to Almora to try to get into the Army. They were on my bus going back to there villages. When they saw me on top, they all came up and we had a fun ride, joking all the way to Nainital!
