Triund Trek - Departure today (20th January 2012)
Hi , I am leaving for mcleod ganj tonight by around 7 ! We plan to do the triund trek day after tomorrow. Will it be open at this time(considering the snow)? Do i need to book beforehand if I want to stay overnight? Is it possible to trek to Illaqa?
Thanks
Thanks
I am not entirely sure but it probably will be open. There will be a lot of snow for sure at this time. I did this trek alone a month ago when there was no snow while going up and snowed heavily in the upper reaches of triund while returning. I did miscalculation after reaching triund top and decided to go further up until snow view/dhauladhar mountain when it started snowing heavily. I went there with no preparation; with a normal sweater and normal shoes. I stayed overnight in a small hut at snow view point. The guy in the hut cooked for me, provided heavy woolen blankets and saved me for the night.
Go with full preparation. It will be VERY cold!
Check this thread for some information : triund in jan end or feb starting

Thanks prince09 , i hope it the triund trek would be safe in winters too? Are normal shoes not good enough? What other preparation is required apart from shoes and clothes?
And also its a stupid question but till where does the mobile phone work?

Normal shoes are definitely NOT good enough for trek at this time of the year. There will be snow..lot of it. You don't want to skid and break your bones(or even fall in the valley)?.A good pair of trekking shoes, thermals and a water proof jacket that'll keep you warm are must.
Mobile phones will not work after Dharamkot, which is about 2-3km above Mcleodganj.

Thanks prince will look there if can get shoes on rent or something . Lets see how it goes

@prince09: Are you sure if the Triund trek is still open? Coz going by the snowfall updates of Himachal, that really leaves me in doubt. Any live updates please.

It's snowing very heavily this time in Himachal and tourists are stuck in Mcleodganj .Even if you dont trek to Triund still you can enjoy Snow in Mcleodganj. It will be very hard for a guy from plains to trek Triund in this season as snow is there.
hi everyone , just returned from mcleod! yes the trek to triund is not possible right now (7-8 feet snow ) . But bhagsu waterfalls has snow all around and its lovely . will post a report soon...
Advice for anyone planning a Triund trek: please tell someone what time will be departing and what time you plan to return. Bring warm winter and clothes even in summer. Best advice of all, don't go alone. It's beautiful up there, but people die every year.
