It'll be warm during the day.

For fishing info you could check with HPTDC's hotel at Rohru, they should be able to guide you.

This is a very hectic plan, actually not doable in the time-frame mentioned, even with your own car. To start with, I would suggest to drop Dhanolti completely.

Day 3 - Dehradun-Lakhamandal-Tiger Fall-Chakrata is possible. You have to walk 1.5 km from the parking spot to the fall. Whether you can do the rest of the sightseeing on that day you'll have to see after reaching Chakrata.

Day 4 - Kimona fall requires a 2 km walk. I suggest to do all the local sightseeing (Chirmiri, Ramtal, Devban, Kimona) on this day.

Day 5 - Kanasar is enroute from Chakrata to Rohru, you can stop by on this day. You will not be able to manage Giriganga if you want to walk to the source (7 km walk one way).

Day 6 - I have not been that far north, but from various reports I gather that the road after Chirgaon (unmetalled) is in bad condition. I don't know if you can make it to Dodra-Kwar and back to Rohru easily in one day. Check with locals, other than that I suggest you restrict yourself upto Chanshal only.
Here's a good TR from May 2014 which will give you an idea:
http://blog.coxandkings.com/ride-to-...chanshal-pass/

Day 7 - You could make it to Dhanolti, provided you don't get stuck in heavy traffic around Mussoorie. Better would be to stop at Mussoorie.

Day 8 - Dhanolti and Kanatal enroute Dehradun would be possible.

P.S. You need to be aware that no petrol is available between Nainbagh (near Lakhamandal) and Rohru on the way up. On the way back, no petrol available till you get to Mussoorie. Diesel is available at Chakrata (at a premium).

I went to Chanshal pass and Dodra and Kwar villages last year using public transport. At that time, the road from Shimla to Hatkoti was in terrible shape. The roads along the Pabbar were comparatively in better shape and the road from the valley to Chanshal was pretty good. You can make a day trip to Chanshal if you hire a taxi. You will find some more details in my TR http://kkasturi1.blogspot.in/2015/04...vel-diary.html

Amazing account and photos Writersblock. Have always wanted to see Dodra Kwar area and your blog has made me envious. Have you any contact telephone number for booking guest houses at Sandasu or Larot? How far is Sandasu from Rohru (which doesn't seem to be a good place to stay, right?)

The guest house in Sandasu is run by the Govt. Electricity Utility. To get a room there, you need to visit the place and meet the Engineer in charge who sits at the nearby electricity office complex. They will normally provide a room if they don't have a rush of officials visiting the place. If you are keen on staying there, take the bus from Rohru to Sandasu in the morning and try your luck. If it does not work out, you can take a bus back to Rohru.
I am not aware of any rest house in Larot.
If you want to do a day visit to Dodra/Kwar, it will be best to hire a cab and start very early so that you can be back in Rohru ( or Sandasu) by night fall. If you take the bus, you will need to rough it out in Dodra or Kwar. While Kwar has a government guest house, there is no guarantee that you will be able to locate the caretaker once you get there.
A last word on accommodation in the area. Chanshal government guest house in Rohru is the easiest to book - you can probably do it online. The rooms are ok for a short stay.

Hope this helps!

Thanks for the reply with extra useful input.
As far as a car is concerned did you not mention somewhere that because of the absence of petrol pumps in the area taxis will charge a steep 30 rs x km on that route? Maybe I saw that elsewhere..... Given that you know the kilometres can you give me an idea of the cost of a car from Rohru? And hours driving for there and back (presuming the road is in good condition in June).
I realised I actually spent a night in Rohru 3 years back, at River View Hotel. It proved to be quite acceptable, the restaurant too. We paid 600 RS + 10% tax. Our goal was to stay at PWD Sungri but it was too late in the day to get there and we had no contact number. We did look at it on the way through next day and the position and gardens are beautiful. It looks like there are interesting walks around there too. I'd definitely try for there on another occasion.

What I love about IM is finding others with the same illusions, who also live with maps spread out on the kitchen table, planning and dreaming of the next adventure into those endless mountains. Thanks for sharing.

Question

BTW: Any info about a back-road but do-able route between that area and Sarahan? The map I pore over is rather out of date (though much-used, a link supplied by Dilliwala some years back)
