Trip to Kinnaur

Hi Friends,

I am planning to visit Kinnaur this Dec first week and wanted your valuable suggestions for this itinerary:

Day 1 - Fly to Chandigarh/Shimla
Q: Is is possible to take flights up to Shimla in Dec? How reliable are these flights?

Day 1 after landing - Chandigarh - Shimla - Narkanda
Q: Please direct me for a good reliable driver from Chandigarh/Shimla. Also, as it would be only 2 of us, is it ok if we travel in a smaller car, or a tavera/scorpio is better for the roads?

Q: Good suggestions for stay at Narkanda. Also, is this a good stopover, or any better ideas? For the stay options, I would prefer someplace which has the best views, with proper facilities. Pls give ur ideas abt camps at any of these places too!

Day 2 - Narkanda - Sangla
Q: There seems to be an inner shorter road to Sangla from Narkanda. Can anyone let me know how this road is in Dec.? And is it a time saver?

Q: Best stay option at Sangla?

Day 3 - Sangla - Chitkul - Sangla
Q: Are there good options to stay in Chitkul. I would like to stay there instead of Sangla, but not sure how feasible it is in Dec.?

Day 4 - Sangla

Day 6 - Sangla - Kalpa
Q: Best stay option? Also, Kinner Kailash doesnt seem to be open in Dec as per the HPTDC website. Is that true? Then what are my options?

Day 7 - Kalpa - Sarahan
Q: Is 1 night good enough in Kalpa? We will reach it by noon the previous day.

Q: Good stay options in Sarahan?

Day 8 - Sarahan - Shimla - Shoghi
Q: Good stay options here?

Day 9 - Shoghi - Chandigarh.

General Qs:

Please give ur feedback on the trip plan.

Also,

I know i'm asking for the moon, but I've complete faith in the IndiaMike angels :-)

Thx in advance.

Zany.

Just a few addln. queries:

1. Can you let me know the stay options in Chitkul? Are there any pvt hotels in Chitkul? And if Sangla, where should I stay? I dont think Banjara Camps function in Dec.

2. I agree with you. I am planning to add one more day in Kalpa.

But today I had a talk with the Hotel Manager at Kinner Villa. He mentioned that hotel would stay open depending upon the weather conditions. Last Dec. they were open. Further, not being a peak season, one can get spot booking. However, my question is:

Is Dec a good time to visit Kalpa? Can someone advice me on whether we would be able to enjoy the view? In some cases it happens that due to bad weather one ends up staying inside the room with fog/clouds all around.

Pls. advice.

Sangla or Chitkul?

Dear Vina,

Thx for the replies. Do you have the tele no. for Thakur Guest House? Also, for any other hotels if you have them. I am getting mixed messages on all these places remaining open in Dec. I think it would be best to call them and confirm before hand.

Also, as I have 3 nights in Sangla, was thinking of breaking it up into 1 night Sangla and 2 nights Chitkul. Or should I stay all 3 nights in Chitkul?

Thx for all the help.

Thakur guest house is definitely closed in winter. the place was just opening in april and was musty as hell.

In winter all water pipes would be frozen during the nights. So no piped water.

Shifting focus

Dear Vina & Nayan,

Many thanks. Spoke to Mr. Thakur. He mentioned that they are already closed, and so is everything else in Chitkul. He said there would be stay options open in Dec. in Sangla though.

But looking at several advices, I am thinking of postponing my Kinnaur trip to September when I will try to cover Lahaul Spiti too.

I got an alternative trip plan for Shimla-Roghu-Khadapathar-Shoghi, but this also ppl told me would be closed if Narkanda is closed, cos both are at similar heights.

That left us with Shimla-PaontaSahib-Renukaji which we are not too keen on because of no Himalayan views.

But looking at all these beautiful snaps and reading the wonderful travelogues have left me and my wife wanting to go north this dec. So we are planning to shift focus to Kumaon, which i gather will be fairly open in Dec.

Advice on that is sorely needed, but will post it in appropriate forum.

Thx for all the help indeed!

I agree Ashwin, but Manali is left for our long trip in a better season when we will cover Kinnaur on the way to Lahaul-Spiti and Manali on the way back. I'll definitely bother you at time

If you have any suggestions for Kumaon, please do let me have your feedback here Advice for trip to Chokauri- Munsiyari - Binsar

Thx, Zany.
