A Himachal Pradesh trip report through Kinnaur and Spiti - August 2008
An excellent work accomplished.Really was helpful for me.
I am going there upto Kalpa or Nako to the max if the road and weather condition permits.I will start from Simla on 9thApril,2011.
Will the weather be chilly then?
How are the road conditions in general? Can a small car like alto/indica/indigo move upto Nako or further?Upto what extent are the roads nicer to drive for small cars?
Please help me out......

Kalpa - Nako - Tabo - Kaza in a day means you won't be able to enjoy the route and even couldn't have a chance to stop for few minutes to enjoy Reo Purygal view from Khab Bridge, Nako Monastary and Lake, Tabo itself takes quite a good time, it's a world heritage site and paintings can be best seen in specific time of day with angle of sunlight as there is no artificial light inside. Then you miss Dhankar Monastery and ofcourse the lake (that's another 3 hours trek up and down). Also you are missing Pin Valley which is simply a "MUST" for anyone visiting the region. Then you are missing Langza/Komic also the Tashigang, that to me was the best among what all I have seen in side valleys of Kaza.

Forget Chandertal in May, you won't be able to manage even by trekking, This year road opened in almost Mid July for Chandertal. So save a day there and proceed surely for Keylong and spend one full day for Pattan Valley, Udaipur, Trilokinath another extremely beautiful valley, you would enjoy the green after the cold desert of Spiti but don't expect Barlachala in May for sure. This year Barlachala got stable for traffic sometimes in almost 3rd week of June.

You can read my trip report here where I gone through this circuit in June, managed Kunzum and Barlachala marginally where I had to miss Chandertaal.

If possible defer your trip by a month, otherwise you won't be able to see what all you have planned.

Cheers!!
I observed your diagnosis of this part of the Himalayas very keenly.
Can you please suggest an itenerary for 8 night's trip which is comfortable?I will start from Simla on 9th April and got train from Kalka on 17th at 11.55pm.

Hi,

If you restrict yourself in 8nights and want a small car and proposed travel date would be April, I would suggest Skip Spiti. Spiti is awesome and it deserves a separate trip. You can drive upto Nako to get a feel how the terrain changes abruptly but considering April is an early season and you prefer a small car, I would suggest restrict yourself within Kinnaur and enjoy every bit of it. The itinerary would be relaxed and you would enjoy the Himalaya and Kinnaur to its best as you won't find much rush during that time.

My take on itinerary in your time frame would be

9th- Sarahan
10th-Sarahan
11th-Sangla / Rakcham / Chitkul (Rakcham is best, Chitkul is good too but accomodation options would be extremely limited during April, you should definitely get accommodations in all the other places)
11th- Sangla / Rakcham / Chitkul
12th-Kalpa
13th-Kalpa
14th-Narkanda
15th-Narkanda
16th-Chail
17th-Kalka Drop

Do some research on Accommodation options, you would get plenty of info here.

Wish you a nice and safe journey.

Thanks for the itinerary.Yes,I only had 8 nights...Alas!!
I have been to Simla,Manali,Naggar during the winters of 2008 and promised a visit to Kinnaur, spiti & Lahaul. But the corporate life restricts me to unleash my passion to the fullest.
I already had in mind that it wont be possible to do trip beyond Kinnaur due to weather & road conditions and so I selected a cheaper mode of transportation.
I also had something similar to this.Only Sarahan got a day lesser and you have added Chail.
I am a nature lover and considering the beauty of Sangla,Kalpa....is it worth spending 2 nights at Sarahan?
Are there any offbeat destinations enroute?

I have been planning similar trip, with more days though. Assuming I can manage April 9 - April 24 (minus 2 days as I would start from Mumbai), is a trip to Kaza doable ? I am not planning Chandratal or Rohtang-Manali round circuit.....I am interested in day treks around Tabo / Kaza and 3 day trek into Pin Valley NP (Mikim-Debsa-Mikim), before turning back. Here's what I am thinking (rough):

(Indo-Tibet Road + Spiti + Pin valley)

Day 1 : Delhi / Chandigarh - Shimla /Kufri / Narkanda
Day 2 : Shimla /Kufri / Narkanda - Sangla
Day 3 : Sangla - Chitkul
Day 4 : Chitkul - Tabo
Day 5 : Tabo
Day 6,7,8 : Pin Valley NP
Day 9 : KazaChitkul
Day 10 : Kaza
Day 11,12,13 : Back to Delhi / Chandigarh

How's the road and accommodation during this time.....the impression I got from posts above is that April is bit early for this region ?

I would suggest you the following as I had visited the area is June, 2011 - Day wise break-up could be -
(i) Delhi-Narkanda; (ii) Narkanda to Sangla; (iii) Sangla - Chitkul - Sangla (26 kms. would take more than a hour so do the circuit in one day); (iv) Sangla - Nako; (v) Nako to Tabo via Gue (if interested in seeing the mummy); (vii)Pin Valley via Dhankar; (viii)Pin valley to Kaza/Kye/Kibber - if possible, Langza by car; (ix) Kaza to Kalpa; (x) Kalpa to Chandigarh/Delhi.
This would cover every destination you need to see in this region.
Have a safe journey

Dear Prajwal 11,
I had visited the places during Oct-2008.
I feel Nov end will be very cold at Sangla & Kalpa. So, take proper winter cloths as you have kids.
Sarahan & Kalpa have HPTDC TRH which are in my opinion are the best as far as location & other facilities are concerned.Nov is off season so availability of rooms will not be a problem. Sarahan Vimakali Temple guest house is also very good but very difficult to get free room. You have to write well in advance. I don't have the mailing address.
During my tour I relied upon my known person of Himachal, he provided me car & booked hotels . Hotels are good but HPTDC IS BEST.
The name & number of the person -- SAVEEN KUMAR-09816311768
He is very reliable person, this June I did my Kashmir tour in his vehicle & hotel arrangement. You can take my reference to him.
You can book HPTDC TRH from HPTDC office at Kolkata ( check HPTDC website & you will get detail about that) which is situated at Esplanade near Sabbir restaurant (the lane beside Elite cinema hall, you ask anybody for Shabir restaurant & you will find it)
P.S. END OF NOV YOU MIGHT FACE SNOWFALL AT CHITKUL

Thank you very much Kousik Mukherjee

Outlook traveller sugests nov as the best season away from the crowd and bearable chill.

Kept the snow factor in mind .Although I have been to solang valley which was full of snow and snowfall in feb end this year along with my kids.

Still thinking and gathering info about the visit to Kinnaur in Nov end .

Thanks a ton.

Dear Prajwal,
I am not suggesting to drop rather feel that November end is one of the best times to visit. I had visited Simla Manali once in Nov.
It is less crowded & the chill factor which I mentioned is for night & only at Kalpa & Sangla.
IT IS NOT POSSIBLE TO REACH CHANDIGARH FROM KALPA IN ONE DAY.
YOUR BETTER PLAN WOULD BE
SIMLA TO SANGLA (IT WILL TAKE 8-9 HRS) & STAY 2 NIGHT THERE.
tHEN STAY ONE NIGHT AT KALPA (SANGLA TO KALPA IS JUST 50 KM BUT IT TAKES ABOUT 3 HRS TO REACH)
Then move from KALPA TO SARAHAN & STAY ONE NIGHT.
NEXT MORNING LEAVE EARLY TO REACH CHANDIGARH SAFELY WELL IN ADVANCE, HOPE YOU WILL CATCH KALKA MAIL

Hi,
Kalpa to shimla is around 242 kms & the average in hill is around 27-30 kms/hour. So around 8 hours it would take. The road condition is rough from Bhawanagar to Kalpa & Sangla. I visited the region last week & yeah Kalpa to Chandigarh is possible in a day. I did Noida to Rakcham (615 kms) in a days though it was hectic, I started at 5am & reached Rakcham at 8 pm :-)
Regards
VB
