Question "Trekking" passes in HP: rideable by bicycle?

Hello dear IndiaMike members,

I'm planning a bicycle tour in Himachal Pradesh, something along Shimla - Kinnaur - Spiti - Pattan - Sach pass - Tissa axle. This forum already was of a great help for the planning.

Many maps show "trekking" roads through higher passes, such as: Monirang pass, Tarsalamu pass, Kunzum - Baralacha-La valley via Topko Gongma. Question: does anybody know actual condition of these paths? I was not able to find a photograph, which would show what kind of "trails" these are. I'm interested whether they are "cyclable" in the mountain-bike sense of this word. Sometimes non-cyclists, especially motorists, are sure that it is impossible to ride a given path, but often devoted cyclists still manage to pass there. So, a report like "I rode there", or a picture showing kilometer long staircase climbs, will persuade me, but otherwise I'll still foster the idea of trying...

Thanks in advance for any views on this.

Well dude taking your bicycle to manirang pass will be WILD and on a serious note impossible...i havent been there personally but as far i know, humans find it hard to cross that pass on foot leave aside bicycling.

Kunzum la and baralacha la are possible, i personally took my enfield bullet 350CC off the road at baralacha pass last year and went on till whereever i can(on the left of the pass).. not sure of what what valley you speaking of though.. Topko Gongma, Excuse me for the ignorance.

bOOm

Well these are motor vehicle roads! of course that is possible for the bicycle. I meant a "shortcut" connecting the two passes straight

Ahh Now i get your Passion
There is a trail to baralacha la pass from kunzum la(chandratal) but i havent done this trek although i heard at times one needs to cross some streams..and it takes 5-6 days apparently with the remotest of treks you can think of

Maybe AvidTrekker or Uttam can help you with the exact detail of this trek, unless there are more routes available which im not aware of.

Happy Cycling

Dear SKP,

You can also Consider Sach Pass in Pangi Valley, its Semi-motrablle. & Ideally Suitable for Mountain Biking.

Been there , almost done that. Shouldn´t be any major problems from Chandra Tal and across the first two streams - but I was there when the water levels were low , mind.

Sach Pass can be done on a bicycle, as vistet suggests. After 15th July trhe smow will have melted.

Manirang Pass... impossible on bicycle, it requires crampons and ropes and ice axes for humans on their two feet.

Tarsalamu Pass.... barely possible ???

Kunzum to Baralacha via Tokpo Gongma is possible to cycle over
