Travelling to HM with children

I think that it will be useful to have a separate thread for those who travel with kids to HM so we all refer to it instead of searching info in each individual thread of HM.

I have seen a couple of threads of travellers with kids and we are all concerned more or less about the same things: health and weather.

I am planning a trip from mid january to end of february with my 4 year old son. Actually I am looking for an ashram (not luxury resort) that accommodates families and offers activities for children. Any suggestions or information would be very useful!

I have been to the Kulu Valley about 10 years ago and now I really want to go back and live that experience with my family.

I donīt know how things are now up there, but I imagine that such remote areas havenīt changed that much! For the rest of India, I have seen a great improvement in the health and hygiene sector so I feel safe to travel with a kid. I would carry a good supply of medicines just in case. Anyway now in Europe with this new influenza H1N1 we are not better off than in India with other common diseases...........

The only health/hygiene problem that I noticed that we all suffered 10 years ago were FLEES!!!!!not big deal but it can be a pain...........

For those who travel with babies, my opinion is that if they are still breastfeeding they are "safe" for almost everything (make sure mummy s that you are well fed!)

Regarding the weather, ok it is cold, some areas that are on the shade can be very humid but if you and your children are properly dressed, it should not be an important issue. I believe that the secret is layered clothing: silk underwear (long pants and long sleeves T-shirts)and local woollen clothes and blankets. At home(hotel or room) a tandoori (wooden stove) is enough to warm up.

My only worry are actually the roads and bus drivers:that can be scary!!!!

No offence about bus drivers, please! They are professionals and definitely I would trust them more than a foreigner driving a 4x4 or any other kind of vehicle.

But it is still scary!
