Hi,

I'm planning to travel to Himachal (from Kolkata) with my wife in the month of September 2009. What I've planned is as follows -
  • 24th Sept - Arrive at Delhi Airport. Stay for the day at Delhi, and take an overnight train to Chakki Bank. (This particular "overnight train journey" trip was in fact suggested at IndiaMike itself in one of the threads. Is this the best way to reach Dharamshala, or any alternatives sugested by you guys?)
  • 25th Sept - Reach Chakki Bank early morning, and take a Bus/Cab to Dharamshala. Reach there by late morning/noon, and check in to a hotel in Mcleodganj. Stay for 4 days/3 nights. Visit surrounding areas (Triund etc). (Is the amount of stay enough to liesurely cover all the places of interest, or should I put in some more days?)
  • 28th Sept - Check out from Mcleodganj, and leave for Dalhousie early morning. Reach Dalhousie by noon, and check into a Hotel there. Stay for 3 days/2 nights. Visit surrounding areas, and cover a trip to Chamba (do I need to stay there at Chamba?).
  • 30th Sept - Start for Delhi early morning, and reach there by evening. Will take a flight back to Kolkata same evening.

Is this itinerary workable, or some modifications are required in it? It will be just the two of us (me n my wife) who will be travelling - so what will be the safety measures we'll have to bear in mind for the trip?

I will be really thankful to you guys if you could please guide me along with a proper workable itinerary for my trip .

Thanks,
Suman.

We were in Dharamshala/Mcleodganj/Khajjiar/Dalhousie last year July...

Yes to train journey...best way to get there....
There is not much to do in McLeodganj...so 4days is too much..You can do local site seeing in Mecleodganj on 25th itself..

26th...Bhagsunag Temple/Bhagsu Falls/Dal Lake/Jwaladeviji/Kangara Fort back to McLeodganj
27th...Drive to Chamba via Jot...It was one the best scenic drives we ever had in our lives. Night Stay in HPTDC hotel Iravati
28th..morning local siteseeing and go to Khajjiar...Night Stay in HPTDC Devdar...very beautiful hotel overlooking Khajjiar Ground
29th...drive to Dalhousie...Visit Kalatop on the way...There are few other attractions on the way...do not remebet the names...We stayed at Hotel Mountview..very nice
30th...Dalhousie siteseeing
1st..back to Delhi/Kolkata

Thanks for the detailed info friend! I've noted down all the points of your suggested itinerary, and will make sure I cover 'em all

However, can you please guide me on a few more points, like -

1) What are the hotels that you would suggest at Mcleodganj (with proper views/amenities, but not overly expensive)?

2) I would've also loved to cover "Triund valley" from Mcleodganj (heard a lot about its scenic beauty). Can I accomodate the same within my itinerary?

3) Which mode of transport will be best from Chakki Bank to Dharamshala - HPTDC Bus or personally rented car?

4) And finally, for all the "drives" you've mentioned - can I get a car directly from HPTDC, and work out a proper package for the entire trip starting from Chakki Bank (and more so from HPTDC, since I'll be mostly staying in HPTDC hotels only at almost all the places)? OR should I rent individual cars from each destinations?

Thanks,
Suman.

1)We stayed in Bhagsu(just 2KMs from McLeodganj)...a hotel across from spring valley resort..do not know the name..It was brand new and had good views. There are plently of hotels on road to Bhagsu so you can just stop by and bargain. You're travelling in off season..so atleast 50% discount everywhere and plenty of rooms will be available.
2) Well..you'll need an extra day for Triund..It's a day long trek(round trip to Triund Peak)
3) There will be plenty of buses from Chakki - McLeod...If you can afford hire a taxi for the entire trip...and if you can not..atleast try to go to Chamba via Jot and take plenty of breaks for the nice scenery and photographs.
4) I do not know about HPTDC...But we hired a taxi from Manu for our entire trip. He's located in Bhagsu and can also help you arrange a day trek to Triund. I would highly recommend him.

Also..try to stay in Hotel Mountview in Dalhousie...It'll be atleast 50% off from regular fair. We rented two bedroom suite for Rs. 2200 last year and were very happy with the location.

Thanks a lot, that answers most of my qeuries for the time being

Now I'll plan up my travel accordingly, taking into account the newly-found info here!

One last thing - can you give me a rough idea how much will be charged (be it Manu or someone else) if I book a cab for the entire trip, or what will be the charge per day/per km basis? It will be pretty helpful for me if I have an estimate of the rates beforehand, so that I can bargain well with the ppl whom I'll contact for the bookings. Same is applicable for the hotels too.

Hope u dont get bored with my never-ending list of queries

We paid Rs. 32K for twelve days for Toyota Innnova(AC) but had Manu picked us from Mathura Railway station. I travlled with wife and three kids so rented the biggest room/two bedroom suite if available. You're only two so ambassador or some small car would do. You can get a small for Rs. 1200-1400 per days for 200-250km. You can have them pick you from Chakki and drop of you off there.
About the rates in hotel...
Rs. 800 for a hotel across from Spring Valley Resport, Bhagsu
Rs. 1400 for Hotel Iravavti(hptdc) Chamba
Rs. 1300 for Hotel Devdar(hptdc) Khajjiar
Rs, 2200 for Hotel Mountview(2 Bedroom Suite) Dalhousie

Distance approximate: Chakki-McLeodganj 90km, Mecleodganj - Chamba via Jot 160km, Chamba - Khajjiar 30 km, Khajjiar - Dalhouse 25km.

Question Weather conditions in sept end...?

Hi guys!

As my journey dates are approaching fast... I need to know something very badly now - What will be the weather conditions in Dharamshala/Mcleodganj (and Triund) during the last week of September? , i.e, how much woolens I need to carry, and whether I'll need hand gloves / woolen socks etc too? I'm assuming that there will be moderate rainfall - so I'll be carrying raincoats/umbrellas with me. I just need to know about winter-wear - so that I can start packing my bags soon

September end will be cool, and I think Kolkatans will need heavy woolens.

So I'll be carrying a couple of full-sleeve sweaters and a jacket. Do I need woolen hand-gloves/socks too?

And I'll be arriving at Chakki Bank (from Delhi) in the morning I(10:00am), and will be traveling to Mcleod by car. Can I assume that I wont be needing heavy woolens at that time itself ?

You will not need any woolen at Chakki Bank. You will not require woolen hand gloves.

Smile

Btw, my final itinerary is as follows -

Day 1 - Arrive at Chakki Bank in the morning, travel by car to Mcleodganj - checking-in at the hotel by noon. Stroll around in the local areas for that day.

Day 2 - Leave for Palampur - Baijnath - Bir - Billing. Return by late evening.

Day 3 - Triund trek.

Day 4 - Local places of interest + Jwalamukhi-Pragpur (if possible).

Day 5 - Check out of the hotel by noon, have a leisurely drive back to Chakki Bank (train to Delhi at 9:30pm from ChkBnk).

Hope the travel plan works out well. Was thinking of any alternate routes which I could avail of during my return drive from Mcleod to ChkBnk, so that I can kill some time

Any comments/ideas?
