Hi,
I will be travelling to Karapathar, Himachal Pradesh this December and will stay there for 2 nights with family. Then we will move to Shimla for another couple of days. My question is what will be the approximate cost of a rental car from Kalka to Karapathar. If anyone has any contact to share then it will be very nice. Thanks in advance.

I don't know for sure. Why not grab 2-3 contact numbers of random cab/taxi organizers and call them to compare?

PS: I am interested in knowing the road condition between and time it takes from Shimla to Kharapatthar. Thanks in advance for sharing when you have done the trip

road conditions are excellent now save for some odd 500 m to a km stretch in between. will take max 2.5 hrs from shimla.

carry heavy woollens. it gets extremely cold and windy in the evenings. do go for day walk till giri ganga (5 to 6 km one way battered road) if possible. also if u get some local taxi there, visit a place called "chunjar" which is like 15 min drive from kharapathar. awesome views from this place. if budget is not a constraint, would suggest you to book a cab for whole trip as getting local cab in kharapathar will be little tricky. dzire/ etios should charge approx 2200-2500 per day.

Great info shared above @lowkey. Thank you. I've avoided this road in the past because of its notoriety. Not anymore

Thanks @LOWKEY for your information and suggestion. What is the quality of the mobile network coverage in and around Kharapathar? Does this place have a 3G/4G network?

I came back from HP on 26th December 2017. Here goes the details:

Day 1: Reached Kalka from New Delhi by the evening Shatabdi (12005) at 11 PM. The train was rescheduled by an hour. I had advanced booking with the Shiwalik Hotel of HPTDC.

Day 2: Started from Kalka at 8 in the morning. Around 11 AM we crossed Shimla and took a short break. The road from Shimla to Kharapatthar is excellent. It's newly built road. There are only two places of hardly 1 KM stretch each are Work in Progress. That road condition is more than expected in any hill station. Otherwise the road condition is excellent. We reached Kharapatthar at around 2 PM. We stayed at Hotel Giri Ganga of HPTDC. It was really cold at Kharaptthar. The hotel manager informed that they had experienced snow fall just a week ago and we could see it everywhere. We have 11 month old daughter with us and she badly needed some rest. So we just strolled around the place after we had lunch and then came back to hotel.

Day 3: We started for sight seeing at around 11 am. The hotel manager arranged for a car (Mahindra Maxx) for visit to Giri Ganga temple and Hatkoti temple. The Giri Ganga temple is just 5-6 km away from the hotel but you have to hike the entire route. Just when we started hiking we could see snow turned ice in the road and the car immediately started skidding. I got really worried because my daughter was with us. The driver (Rahul) assured us that he would manage it as this is normal. However after proceeding another 2 km further, the Rahul himself got worried and stopped the car and asked us to trek the remaining icy way with him. We managed to go around 1 km or so but it was getting colder and colder as we were hiking. Moreover the road became more slippery and it was becoming bit risky with my daughter in the lap. So finally we decided not to go further. We then came down and started for Hatkoti tample which is around 20 km away from Kharapatthar. The road to Hatkoti temple is even better. The location of the temple is nice. We spent little time there and then came back to hotel around 4 pm. We talked to the Rahul and he agreed to drop us at Naldehra the next day.

Day 4: We checked out from Giri Ganga hotel at 12 noon and started for Naldehra. Rahul is a very good person. He is so cordial he brought a bag full of apple grown in his yard. They are really tasty. They are completely yellow, which we never knew to exist. He is really cool. We reached Naldehra at around 2:30 pm. We stayed at Hotel Golf Glade of HPTDC. After having our lunch, we strolled around the local area and observed the sunset. The restaurant of this hotel is very nice. The view from this restaurant is beautiful.

Day 5: We hired two local horses with guide for visiting the Naldehra Golf Course and couple of other places. You have to hike this place only by a horse ride. This was a good experince for us. The total time for this trip was around 50 minutes. The whole afternoon and evening we spent strolling around the local vilages and markets.

Day 6: It's time to say goodbye to HP for a couple of month. We checked out at 12 noon and reached Kalka at around 5 pm. It took longer than usual because of traffic rush in Shimla due to Christmas. This time Shatabdi (12012) was on time.

I almost forgot to mention that Airtel 4G was way better than my expectation.

We have already planned to visit McLeod Ganj/Dharamshala in the last week of February 2018.
