Hi,
What is a reasonable per km fare for a small car (Indica/800/Omni) in the Shimla region?
Cheers!

Don't think per km rate works if a car is hired in Shimla region. May work if Car is taken from Delhi or so.

When I asked the reasons, the answers I received were in these region terrain differs substantially, a Lahaul/Spiti trip never can be compared with Kangra Valley and wear and tear is so high in some places a simple per km rate that works in plane don't work in Hill.

What I understood from feedback of different people, it could be fixed point to point rate for short distance and for long distance people used to take car in a per day basis. This can again be all inclusive of fuel, driver etc. or just car hire charge per day and then fuel and driver separately paid.

I was enquiring about Sumo and it is coming 1700 to 1900 per day all inclusive so my guess Alto/800/Indica should be sub 1500 range per day.

Hello

If you are looking for the Shimla region then its possible it could be even higher ... considering its gonna be high season time so anything between 1400-1600 a day ... Also if its for a short duration then even much higher for a 3-4 day trip around Shimla sometimes even like 6,500-7000 range ..

Dhananjay

Thanks, Dhananjay.

Here is the route we were planning.

Route: Shimla - Kharapathar (94Kms) - Rohru (40kms) - Thanedar (46Kms) - TBD

We plan to travel at leisure with small treks etc in the itinerary.
We don't want to rent a car for a long duration because there would be days when we would be paying for the car unnecessarily.

Based on the above Route, would we be able to hire cabs only when we need change hotels (say, Kjarapathar to Rohru, Rohru to Thanedar ...)? We plan to use the bus for day trips (when we are not lugging our backpacks).

The weather seems to be a bit wonky. Hence we are not sure where to go after Thanedar. Ideally we would have liked to proceed towards Kinnaur, Spiti .... Any advice?

Thanks,
Madhu

Hello

Hello Madhu,

That's mt mother's name. hehe . Anyways.

Rohru Kharapathar should not be a problem at all. I would suggest depend rather on the local buses. A plenty. Rohru to Thanedar is also not long about 3 hours so a bus would be good there too. Of course if you insist on cabs you do get them .The local cab guys do charge a lil more, which is understandable. I would put Rohru - Kharapathar @ 700-800 and Thanedar - Rohru (Via Tikker - Baghi - Narkanda @ 1200-1400).

The weather sure is a deceit these days. One day you see the sun shining and the next moment you know there is rain and snow from no where.

I would suggest doing Kinnaur and Spiti post the apple country .. If you have time give it as much time .. there is so much to do see and know there ...

Lemme know if you need any help or more inputs ..

enjoy,

Cheers and Regards,
Dhananjay

Hi Dhananjay,

Thanks for the info.
Today morning we took a cab from Shoghi to Lakkar Bazaar for 300 bucks and then a direct HP Bus to Kharapattar (85 bucks). It was quite comfy.

You are spot on the weather - It started to rain quite heavily in the morning. I am not sure if we will be able to trek to Giriganga.

I didn't quite get what you meant by
"I would suggest doing Kinnaur and Spiti post the apple country "
Thanks.

Cheers!

Hello

Hey,

Checked your blog ... wow that looks nice ... It mentions Camp craignano ... Till about last year, I was running that place... Its still our team which is running the place ... I had to move to Delhi and keep Shuffling now between Shimla and Delhi for professional reasons ...

I would suggest if you are in Khara Pathar right now ... Walk to Kuppar ... The walk does not get troubled by rain .. You can always walk .. Nearby villages of Tau and deorighat are absolutely great as well .. Its right in the heart of apple country ..

What I meant was that if you have time definite;ly make it to Kinnaur and Spiti .. What I understand now is that possibly you are running short ...

I would suggest ... How about Making it to Rohru, further to Janglik and walking to Chandernan Lake and back .. Its gonna be amazing these days ... Or maybe .. towards Mori (about two hours from Rohru in uttarakhand) and going up to taluka and back .. taluka is on the Har ki dun walk .. Amazing place ... You could come back via Chakrata and Dehradun ..

Or maybe go to Nerwa from Tiuni and Saraha in Sirmaur and do the Choordhar walk ... All great options ...

Do update your blog ...

Cheers,

Dhananjay

Hey Dhanajay,

Camp Craignano looked really nice. But we had already booked our stay at a near by hotel. Otherwise we would have loved to check it out. There is always 'next time'

Yes, we are @ Kharapathar. We went to Deorighat last evening. Today we went up to Giriganga - awesome trail.

We plan to leave for Rohru tomorrow. Thanks again for all the advice. Appreciate it.

Cheers,
Madhu

Hey Dhananjay,
We are currently in Rohru. We spent the day @ Hatkoti and the evening in Rohru (Bazaar etc).

I was unable to find info on Janglik or Chandernan Lake.

Hence I had a couple of questions.
How far is Janglik from Rohru?
How long is the walk to Chandernan Lake.

Thanks!

Hello

In rohru bazaar, there is a tourism hotel in the beginning. They would be the right people.

Ask some cab driver to take you on the Chirgaon road towards Janglik. From there you will cross the river and walk to janglik village. From the village its a 3 day walk to the lake and back. I tell you this is the valley of flowers for Himachal. A must do if you like walking, with the great passes (Buran, Rupin) in sight and the high mountains, walking through meadows. Another two days after the lake would bring you to Sangla .. though I know you are not gonna do it right now , Any problems you can give me a call if you have a cab guy and I can explain him or you ..097186-30467

Cheers and Regards,
Dhananjay

Hi Dhananjay,
Thanks for your advice.
We didn't want to do a multiple day trek since we need to be at Thanedar on the 5th. Will definitely keep this in mind the next time we are in the area.
Cheers!
