Tavelling Shimla,Kullu and Manali in September!
I am planning for a tour in Himachal Pradesh (Shimla,Kullu and Manali) in end september with my mother and younger brother.
My travel plans are something like this: From Delhi to Kalka by Kalka mail. From Kalka toShimla by toy train.Spend 2 days in Shimla.(I am thinking of booking Hotel Beas)Spend 3 days in Manali( Appleview guest house)and i day At Kullu (Central Hotel). Can anybody tell me if these choices are good?? Also can anybody tell me what should be a good way to come back from Manali/Kullu to Delhi?? From Delhi I will have to catch a train to Howrah! I guess I am posting too many questions.Actually my mother is getting old and cannot take too much journey load! Also I have to keep my tour in budget! |

there are lots of places to see around Shimla , Kulu & Manali. If possible try to explore the places. You can opt for Volvo bus for going Delhi from Manali. HRTC has daily volvo bus service from Manali - Delhi ( Viceversa ). Booking can be done in advance too & online booking is possible .

Mrinalini you can come back to Delhi via Volvo, ticket costs Rs.850 per person, normal bus ticket costs less then Rs.350
Kiranlal Ladakh weather in September is quite good, I will be going there in September as well, and in fact I went there last year in September as well. However after the second week of September passes start receiving snow fall and there is a chance of them closing for a while. |

Welcome to Indiamike, Try skipping Apple View Guest House in Manali, as you've mentioned your mother is Old. Apple View is sitting a high on hill, though not very high but old persons can find a bit difficult to climb steps leading to Apple View, and apart from climbing there's no light on the way in night. Hi
The best way to travel manali delhi is the HPTDC Volvo which is quite comfortable. Make sure you book seats inthe front/ middle of the bus. The seats in the back are usually the ones that ont recline or are not comfortable. For Manali my recommendation would be the Hotel Beas ( HPTDC- budget) centrally located yet away from the noise. But considering your mother's health ( it is a couple of minutes down hill from the mall.) you can try the Kunzum ( HPTDC) which is right in the mall on the road so no climbing involved. For shimla we stayed at the Delziel and can recommed it. Have fun & enjoy your trip. Mani |

Hi mrinalini,
u need to make sure that you book HPTDC or HRTC volvo seats in advance as they are quite in demand even in off-season.in manali you can try one of the several hotels in loghuts area or hotel beas view overlooking river beas(dont confuse it with HPTDC hotel beas which is very avarage).Kullu is not so great a place,so try exploring nearby areas like kasol, naggar, raison, katrain etc. |

Hi ddutta,Yogesh,MK,mani and Rishabh, Thanks a lot for the infos. I think I will take the Volvo bus from MAnali to Delhi. And of course I will try to book the front or middle seats! Rishabh, Do you think it is better to stay in Kasol or Naggar rather than Kullu??? Or I can stay in Kullu and explore these places??
I need to explore a little bit on Hotels. Can anybody suggest me reasonable budget guest house/hotels in Shimla, Manali and Kullu? Does anybody have any idea about Hotel SATKAAR in Shimla? |

On my personal opinion Kullu is better bet because of ease of easy accessibility for everything u can think of.
Naggar is bit of an easy place to be where you can spend about 2 days going to reorich's museum and old Temples around. I guess another best bet for hotels is HPTDC website. CheerS -M-

my suggestion would be to stay in kasol and naggar instead of kullu since kullu is more or less treated as a gateway to better places;as far as transportation is concerned ,you will get a lot of taxis to and from naggar and kasol and HRTC buses as well.In naggar you can stay in HPTDC's hotel castle, which was the palace of former kullu kings,it's not very expensive and commands excellent views of the valley. |

Thanks rishabh! After reading your post,I checked the HPTDC's website! Now I have to decide whereto stay...Kullu or Naggar
!!! Did anybody stay in Central Hotel Kullu?? I just wanted to get some reviews before I make my final plan.By the way, My layout of plan goes as follows: 1)Reach Delhi from USA.My mother and brother will join me at the airport. 2) Stay overnight at any hotel in Delhi.(Night 1) 3) Spend the whole day at delhi and catch Howrah Kalka Mail from Delhi station at night 20.50 pm(day 2) 4)Reach kALKA at 5.00am on next day.(day 3) 5) Catch the connecting Shivalik Deluxe Express at 5.30 am( it is connected to HWH KALKA MAIL) 6) Reach shimla at 10.15am.(day 3) 7) Spend day 3, 4 and 5 at Shimla ( I have thought of booking Hotel Satkaar or ) 8) Start for Kullu on day 6. Stay at Kullu or go to Naggar/Kasol 9) Spend day 7,8 and 9 (till noon) at MAnali. Take HPTDC's conducted tours.(thought of hotel BEAS or Apple view guest house....my mother liked its website and says she is interested to stay there if available !!!!I emailed appleview guesthouse but didnot get any reply yet 10) Take a VOLVO bus in the evening to reach Delhi on day 10 morning. 11) return to Kolkata on day 10 evening by air and get flat on bed !!!!!!!!!!!!The questions I have: 1)anybody who stayed in Central Hotel, Kullu, please let me know your views abt this hotel 2)any suggestion for sight seeing at Shimla?? I have the foolwing things in mind: (Shimla-Kufri-Fagu-Chini Banglow-Naldehra OR Shimla-Fagu-Matiana-Narkanda & Back) - mrinalini |

Mrinalini,
I'd suggest HPTDC at Fagu, some 30km ahead of Shimla. Shimla is tooo over touristy for any relaxation/peace, esp on the weekend when every tom dick n harry comes down. You could backtrack one day to Shimla just to sightsee, but its not a place to just relax at! |

hi mrinalini,
just returned from a rohtang-manali-naggar-kullu-kasol trip. in manali we stayed at hotel beas...its an old wooden hotel very poorly maintained but location is just perfect very calm yet near the market..try to get a room on the right side of the reception...on the left side there`s a bridge (with steel plates) nearby and all the time its very noisy. my suggestion for you will be to stay in kullu, take day long tours to naggar and kasol and come back because there nothing much to see and do in these places and there are no facilities either. in kullu we stayed at Basera Holiday Home just on the banks of the river Beas...prices are very nominal arnd Rs. 400/- for a room and its away from the bustle of the city...on the main road to bhunter.... their ph. no. is 01902 222505 |
