Summer Vacation toss up

Hi !

I am already late planning the annual vacation and the significant other is not being helpful.

The general idea is to get ourselves to delhi by 16th May then onto manali

17-21 May manali (local SS, Rohtang pass - young one wants to play in snow)
22-23 May Shimla
24 May shimla kalka train
25 May back to mumbai - paschim / back to delhi onto mumbai rajdhani

we would like to have a take it easy holiday where we stay in small inexpensive and peaceful places. not too far from action. also please consider that the young one is a 6 year old boy.

Have tried to look at hotel reviews and other forums. Please help by recommending hotels and eating places.

also have just found out from HPTCD that the delhi manali bus leaves delhi at 6:30 pm and gets to manali by 9:00 am. anybody traveled and can tell us if the places it stops for dinner etc are OK.

There is an overnight Volvo bus service between Delhi & Manali. You must book very very well in advance. Manali will see a big rush of tourists in the month of May so accomodation will be expensive & you should book in advance.
If you are planing to take the overnight train from Kalka to Delhi reserve berths early.
While in Shimla visit the Indian Coffee Home, try their mutton cutlets & Keema Dosa & ofcourse the excellent coffee. Balji's shop for Ras malai & Gulab Jamun. Shere Punjab dhaba for seek kababs.

I have noted your recommendations and will book the transport in advance as soon as travel dates are confirmed.

Please recommend hotels / guest houses for both places (budget-500-700) how is the location of the Hotel beas (hptdc) in manali is it near the bus depot.

Hotel Beas has an excellent location - bang on the river front. Its also near the bus stop - just a short, enjoyable walk down.

Book the hotel right now; as also your train journeys.

You plan to spend very little time at Shimla. Two days are hardly enough to cover anything !

Hotel Classic and Hotel Dalziel are two of my choices for Shimla. They are next door to each other at the end of the Mall past the SBI. It's about a 5 minute walk to the main part of the mall and the views from the rooms are nice with big windows. I stayed at Classic last year(350rs/double) and Dalziel the year before(325rs/single). Both times in July, so expect to pay somewhat more for mid May.

We have booked our tickets to delhi - thank you once again for all your help.

For our return am planning to take the 2KS shimla- Kaka train arriving into kalka at 20:30 hrs and next day morning Paschim express back to Mumbai.

Is there some reasonable hotel /guest house in Kalka near the railway station for the overnight stop.

For manali can anybody give me an approximate cost for local sightseeing by jeep/ bus on sharing basis - especially for beas kund

3 kms. from Kalka is Parwanoo, on the Kalka-Shimla highway. HPTDC runs hotel Shivalik here, which is good.
