Summer Accommodation in HP

I am planning to be in the Himachal Pradesh and Uttaranchal regions in May/June. What is the availability of accommodation at this time? Will I need to make all my reservations ahead of time?

I can get by with very little, so budget places will be my preference. I've checked out the HPTDC site, and the rates they are showing seem to be on the mid to high end of cost (at least compared to other prices I've read about for India). Dharamsala is probably where I'll spend most of my time.

Advance booking

You have a wide choice of accomodation in Himachal Pradesh, but you will have to book well in advance for May and June, as these are the peak tourist months in H.P. The same applies to Uttaranchal.

The problem with on-line booking is that those hotels which have this facility are generally the more expensive ones; whereas you can get information on the budget hotels mainly through word of mouth.

Still, try a hotel search through google; there are plenty of hotel sites which the search will throw up and you may still find a budget hotel where on-line booking is possible or at least you may be able to get their E-mail contact.

All the best !

shimla:

no offence, but are you mad?! one must book ahead?! ive never booked ahead in ten years of travel throughout asia.

the reason i ask is that i plan to travel april-sept in hp. ill sleep in the raw before booking ahead!

could someone else pls verify - what a madhouse hp must be if this is true!

there is absolutely no way i would book using my visa card thru internet anywhere in asia -double for india. e bookings alwyas have problems in se asia. you show up, the rooms gone to some goof whose paid an even stupidier amount of money than you did (on the net).

finally, why would anyone book anything before seeing it? reserve a rps150 a night room? no way!

It all depends on what kind of hotels you are going to be using.

A growing number of Indian middle class families can now afford to escape the pre-monsoon heat of the plains to take holidays in the hill stations. However, they generally don't stay in low budget places. As Shimla says May and June are peak season and if you plan to stay in 3* to 5* hotels then pre-booking is probably essential. HPTDC places also tend to be popular.

If you're planning to use low budget hotels and guest houses or even rent a room in a family house then there should be no problems. I certainly don't anticipate having any difficulty in finding a place in Manali end of June/early July before taking the bus to Leh.

republic of charas,

Mine was a well-intentioned suggestion. You take it or leave it.

cool, thanks alan, you 2 shimla.

times have sure changed...when "backpackers" book 3*-5* hotels on internet -in advance. take fancy tours....no wonder the world looks at westerners as walking atm machines.

handphones, discman+speakers+headsets, water purifiers, online reservations...guess im an old man. you leave home, only to drag all your 'baggage' along with you...

reminds me of a kafka quote i use often: a bird went in search of a cage.
