Hi everyone,

We few families are planning a Himachal trip in end of March. We will be traveling with kids around 4 years old and with one infant (10 months). Planning a 10 day tour.

The planned itinerary was:
Day 1 - Reach Chandigarh - leave for Shimla
Day 2 - Stay in Simla
Day 3 - Simla to Kulu or Manali
Day 4 - Stay in Kulu or Manali - visit to Rohtang pass, etc.
Day 5 - Manali to Dharamshala
Day 6 - Stay at Dharamshala
Day 7 - Dharamshala to Dalhousie
Day 8 - Stay at Dalhousie
Day 9 - Dalhousie to Amritsar
Day 10 - Amritsar to Mumbai

We now realise that quite a few legs of this journey has 7-8 hours car travel which may not be possible with kids. Wanted your suggestions for following:

1. Should we drop Kulu/Manali and go straight to Dalhousie? If so, what other areas can be cover on that side? Kindly suggest alternate itinerary if possible. How is the itinerary at HP Tourism website covering Chintpurni - Jwalamukhi - Kangra - Dalhousie - Khajjiar - Chamba - Dharamsala - Chamunda - Palampur? (http://hptdc.gov.in/cir03.htm)

2. Is Rohtang pass open during late March? Getting varied feedback online.

3. We would like to cover more offbeat areas than the touristy ones. I had thought of Lahaul-Spiti too. But are comfortable stays available at these places? (Meaning hot water, electricity and general 2* level of comfort?)

4. Is it sensible to take a car from Chandigarh and leave it at Amritsar?Or that will be more expensive?

Looking forward to advice from all of you.

Thanks in advance,
Zany.

We (6 bachelor s) did this trip in 9 days. But that was a very tight schedule. Suggest to add a couple of days. Add one more day to Manali/Kullu to see the local sight seeing. Rohtang pass or Solong valley need a full day.
In Dharamsala you can visit Tibetan Monastery, Bhangu falls & temple etc. It need about 6/7 hours.

Most probably Rohtang pass will be closed in March.

I think you could skip Manali. Do Shimla - Dalhousie - Khajjiar - Bir - Dharamshala - Mcleodganj - Amritsar. In between Shimla and Dalhousie if you want you could spend a night in Rewalsar.

Hi,

Our earlier plan failed and we are thinking of now going in June 2017. Our itinerary will be more relaxed as follows:

Day 1 - Reach Amritsar - stay night
Day 2 - To Dalhousie
Day 3 - Dalhousie to Khajjiar and back
Day 4 - Dalhousie local sightseeing
Day 5 - To Dharamshala
Day 6 - Dharamshala local sightseeing
Day 7 - Dharamshala - McLeodGanj and nearby
Day 8 - To Amritsar - stay night there
Day 9 - Amritsar to Mumbai

We are travelling with 4 kids and 2 senior citizens.

Need advice on following:

1. Please suggest if weather will be good when we plan to go in end of June.

2. Please provide any good contacts for drivers. Should we take someone from Amrtisar itself or from Dalhousie?

3. Are the HPTDC hotels good in these places? Or any better one to be opted for?

4. What off beat places can we see at these destinations?

Any other advice is also most welcome.

Thanks,

Zanyguy.

How are you travel to and from Amritsar? Is the first night in Amritsar just because your plan is to Amritsar first?

You can take a direct train to Pathankot and then travel onwards to Dalhousie.

Hi, sorry for delay in getting back to you. Was out.

We are travelling from Bombay by flight and hence chose Amritsar as first halt. No other reason.

1. We have slightly modified the plan after some study and advice. We will start the trip from Amritsar but end it in Chandigarh. It seems distance from Dharamshala to Chandigarh and Amritsar is equivalent. That way we can get better flight options from Chandigarh. Is this better?

2. We are planning to cover Amritsar in the half day - from afternoon on day 1. The idea is to go to Jallianwala Bagh once we reach, go to Wagah and back by 7, and then night view of the Golden Temple. Is this doable?

3. Would 9 seater Tata Wingers or 10 seater vans be available? Or we should go for 2 cars?

4. Can someone recommend a driver for our trip?

Thanks,
Zany.
