Spots close to Dharamsala
I will be up North in early Aug does anyone have suggestions for destinations (towns, treks, nature, villages, ect.) that are near Dharamsala but outside its sphere of influence? Would like to branch out and see more of what Himachal Pradesh has to offer. Thanks

Triund, Kareri lake, Baijnath?
A popular hike out of McLeod Ganj is Triund, which has good views and a nice rest house to offer. Walking from McLeod Ganj can take up to six hours. Another trek that takes you out of Dharamsala's "sphere of influence" goes via Salli village and Kareri lake. This trail is low on physical effort but lets you stay in little Himachali villages and watch a variety of trees, birds and animals. A little farther away are treks that start from Baijnath, where you can go from Dharamsala by bus.
You can get accurate information and more help from guides at the Regional Mountaineering Center (RMC) in McLeod Ganj or other trekking agencies. Will be happy to share some phone numbers if you need. (All three treks, by the way, can be done without guides. The trails are well marked on maps made by the RMC. They sell these at Rs 20 a sheet.) Girish. |

One possible route is McLeod Ganj -- Salli -- Chandrela camping site -- Kareri Lake -- Lahesh camping site -- Baleni Pass. There's another trail that runs very close: McLeod Ganj -- Dharamkot -- Ghera -- Kanjrala -- Kareri -- Kareri Lake -- Minkiani Pass. Lonely Planet's Indian Himalaya guide has some stuff on the second route.
