Hi! Most places in Kaza cost less than that, for 500 Rs you can get a room with Tv,carpet table chairs and a good bathroom with shower and of course hot water.

My guide was great (an ecosphere guide) and he showed me around all the villages and all the various things ecosphere works on in these villages.

I read mridula’s post and that is what inspired me to contact them – thanks mridula – I later read meczko and was little apprehensive – however I visited the Ecosphere website and understood what they are trying to do – promote responsible and eco-travel in spiti – by giving fair prices to the community for their services – and working on various conservation and development activities -- I felt I could pay that extra few hundred rupees knowing the villagers would get a better price and even if ecosphere did make anything out of it – it would go towards its various projects – as they are non-profit – which I learnt of in greater detail after I met the ecosphere team in kaza.

By the way they have even set up an drinking water refilling system in kaza to help curb the waste we tourists generate from mineral water bottles –and you can refill your bottle with drinking water for free!! – so if you visit kaza just carry your water bottles and fill as much as you want.

Have a great trip – I would definitely recommend ecosphere!!

Hi! People should not be fooled by some smokescreen. This so called non profit organization is very much a profit one,and in the villages they created many more problems than they solved.Booking for homestays is hardly necessary. Just go,and in most villages somebody will put you up,average cost being 300 Rs per day everything included, can be a bit less or a bit more. Don't worry, and don't contribute to make the locals more commercial than they are, already.

Hi,

I recently inquired about homestays in Spiti. I am not quite aware of this region but was informed that homestay would not be available in the month of January because temperatures go down to -25C.

Are there any similar locations (little towns or villages) in that region with operational roads? i dont really mind low temperatures and would prefer either a home stay but if theres no option i dont mind settling for a hotel.

Havent been in snow before but am not fussy about it. However what are the things I need to worry about in such conditions (-25C)? Will a camcorder work? How do i book my journey out on the way back??

Hi! In every village you can reach there will be options to stay with people. Few days back Kaza was easily reachable from Kinnaur, and there was no snow from Tabo downwards.Even the road to Losar had just be reopened. The Pin valley road was open until Sagnam and that's a place where you can homestay, like Kaza itself. Perhaps the high villages on the plateau above Kaza are not reachable now,and it would be very cold anyway. To go back to Kinnaur you can take a bus or book a jeep at the taxi union. No idea about camcorders. For those temperatures you need very warm clothes and shoes, down jacket a must.
