Hi Folks,

Planning to visit Spiti Valley between July 27 and August 6 on motorcyles. Here is an itinerary I have planned after some research on IM and other websites:

Day 1: Dehradun -> Paonta Sahib -> Nahan -> Solan -> Shimla
Day 2: Shimla -> Darlaghat -> Barmana -> Ner Chowk -> Mandi -> Aut -> Bhuntar -> Manikaran -> Kullu -> Manali
Day 3: Manali -> Rohtang La -> Gramphu -> Batal -> Chandra Tal
Day 4: Chandra Tal -> Batal -> Kaza -> Key Monastery -> Kibber
Day 5: Kibber -> Kaza -> Langza -> Hikkim -> Komik
Day 6: Komik -> Kaza -> Mud -> Pin Valley
Day 7: Mud -> Tabo -> Dhankar
Day 8: Dhankar -> Nako -> Khab -> Poo -> Reckong Peo -> Sangla -> Chitkul
Day 9: Chitkul -> Sangla -> Narkanda -> Shimla
Day 10: Shimla -> Solan -> Nahan -> Paonta Sahib -> Dehradun

Questions:

1. Please let me know if the above itinerary is doable?
2. We would not be able to start before 3pm on Day 1 from Dehradun. Can someone confirm if we can make it to Shimla on the same day?
3. On Day 2 we are planning to reach Manali covering Manikaran. Not sure if this doable as well. Please advice.
4. Dehradun being a low altitude area, we will be gaining more altitude on the first two days (from 500m to 2200m). Will AMS be a concern ?
5. Can you please help us calculate the distance between Kaza to Komik via Langza and Hikkim? Is the road motorable till Komik?
6. Is there any way to reach Kaza directly from Komik?
7. Have very few places to cover on Day 6 & 7. Is there any other place that could be added on these days? Or is there any trekking option in Pin Valley?

Thanks.

Hi, I'll try to answer your queries:

1. 2. - The itinerary looks doable but can be tight during first two days. By my understanding it will take anything between 6-7 hours to reach Shimla from Dehradun.
3. - Again on Day 2, Shimla - Manali usually takes around seven hours and if you adding Manikaran to it, it will again stretch the day by aroubd 3-4 hours.

4. - I don't think AMS will be a problem here.

5. 6. - The Kaza - Komik - Kaza circuit will be about 50 kms, by my estimate and you can reach Komik through a drivable road. You can also reach Kaza directly from Hikkim, by-passing Langza.

7. - You can actually reach Pin Valley on day 5 after visiting Komik and Langza. This will save you a day which you can utilize in splitting your journey on Day 1 and 2.

Thank you for the replies aashish37

We hope we will be able to make this circuit. I have another question now.

Is the road to Sangla and Chitkul open? Came to know the recent landslides had shut down these roads. Can anyone confirm the current status?

Thanks.

Hi Guys,

Thanks for your help. My Spiti Itinerary went for a toss when the trip actually happened. Had to make a lot of changes on the go. Missed out to visit almost all places on the list and ended up getting stranded in the cold desert. Luckily, we survived to narrate the tale and for sure had priceless life lessons and experiences. You can read more about by report in the link below:

Thanks aashish37 & ManishL for your tips. It certainly helped.

Regards,
Pashernx
