In Himachal, the peak season starts from Dec 15 to Jan 5 where the prices for hotels shoot up 3-4 times.

Plan your trip in the first quarter and all should be fine.

Keep a 2 nights stay in Shimla and 3 night in Manali.

Sixth day in the evening, take the overnight VOLVO to Delhi. There is plenty of VOLVO information in the forums. Please search.

You can take HPTDC sightseeing tours in Shimla and Manali or hire a cab. Rohtang will be off bound for sure during this period.

Shimla Manali Trip

Take a night train to Kalka. Will Reach Kalka next morn.
Day 1 Take train to Shimla. Stroll on the Mall Road & shop.
Day 2 Hire a taxi. Visit Naldhera & Narkanda/Chail.
Day 3 Local sightseeing, visit temples and explore the Mall Road
Take ni bus to Manali. Deluxe buses are available.
Day 4 Local sightseeing at Manali. Visit Hidimba temple,
Vashisht Baths, Solang Nala, etc.
Day 5. Go towards Rohtang unless snow stops you. Freak out at
Solang Nala. Stay at Naggar.
Day 6. Sight seeing at Naggar. Visit Manikaran. Stay at
kullu/ Mandi.
Day 7. See Kullu & Temples at Mandi.
Take ni bus to Delhi.

Try tourism hotels. You will have to book in advance. Budget hotels are available but at the time you are planning to visit they overnight hike tarrif. If you plan to have a full time veh at your disposal, you can explore Homestays also. Plenty of them around Shimla & Manali. Tourism Deptt. also offers package tours. Check with them.

It will be pretty cold in Dec. If you are lucky, you could enjoy fresh snowfall. Kalka Shimla road is a pleasure to drive on. Shimla to Ghagas is OK but Ghagas to Manali is a again a pleasant drive. U will fall in love with Himachal and its people. Hv a nice time.

Sorry for a delayed reply here, somehow I missed the thread.

You can stay at Naggar for sure. The best address in town is the HPTDC run The Naggar Castle. It can be booked online on HPTDC website.

@ cdtph

thank you for your reply. I will go through the website. Just clear me with one thing, if we will directly go to naggar and looking for accommodation in naggar palace, wiil we make it out without prior booking in December?
Is the price negotiable or fixed?

Being a govt organisation, Himachal Tourism prices are fixed. Till 15 December, normally HPTDC hotels give discounts which can be enquired with the hotel.

If you are traveling before 20th December I guess you can get the room at the hotel. 21 Dec - Jan 5 is a high season in Himachal.

Dear IndiaMikers,
We are 4 adults with two 6-years old kids planning to visit spots under option 1 or option 2 between December 24th and January 3rd

Option 1: Shimla,Manali, Saharan, Chail, Hatu Peak, Kufri, Rohtang Pass
Option 2: Shimla, Manali, Kalpa, Sangla, Chitkul.

This is the first time we are going to Himachal so not much idea about the places. So please help me with the following

Option 1:
- How will be the climate? Is it safe to access these areas
- Will there be any snowfall/snow in and around any if the places?
- Do we have to book accommodations well in advance (as these places are generally crowded in this part of the year)
- What could be a tentative cost for hotel (no deluxe, only budget), conveyance and food for 4 adults + 2 kids for 10 days?
- Is 10-11 days enough to access all these places?
- If there is any other place I should visit but missed in the list

Option 2:
- Are those places at all accessible during this time?
- If yes, is it advisable to visit?
- What are the booking options? Do we have to book well in advance?
- What could be a tentative cost for hotel (no deluxe, only budget. we are good to accommodate in 4-bed rooms too!), conveyance and food for 4 adults + 2 kids for 10 days?
- Is 10-11 days enough to access all these places?
- If there is any other place I should visit but missed in the list

Also, it would be a great help if anybody can please provide -
- Phone numbers of some budget hotels
- Phone numbers of syndicate or cab / taxi owners

Our budget for 10 days' trip for either option would be a maximum of total INR 30,000 (4 adults and 2 kids) excluding train fare for Howrah-Kalka-Howrah. Would this be enough?

Sorry, I asked too many questions.. :P
