Hi,
My family (wife, 6yr old girl, 1yr old boy) would be travelling to Shimla for 4 nights from Feb 9. We are from South India and are not used to cold weather. We are hoping for snowfall or some snow play in an around Shimla. We would be flying to Chandigarh by 12.30pm and hoping to take a taxi or bus to Shimla and reach Shimla by 4.30pm. We have our return flight from Chandigarh at 12pm on 13th Feb. I need help in planning the itinerary as am not sure what places would be accessible during this time especially with a toddler we won't be able to venture on any adventure sports. We welcome any advice and tips. Also regarding the toy train, I beleive it would take a whole day to drive by Taxi to Kalka and then take the train back to Shimla? Any other suggestions?

Thanks in advance,

regards,
Ram

The last train that leaves Kalka for Shimla is at 12:10 in the noon which is 20 minutes before your plan lands in Chandigarh. For train timings from Kalka to Shimla see http://erail.in/?T=KLK::SML. For train timings from Shimla to Kalka see http://erail.in/?T=SML::KLK. With your current plan say bye bye to the train to or from Shimla. You could plan to reach Chandigarh a day prior to your depature if you want to travel in the train during your return.

Chandigarh to Kalka is around 50 kms. This distance could be covered in around 80 minutes.

If you are lucky you can expect snowfall in Shimla. It snowed on Christmas in Shimla after 24 years. If you want snow you could go to Hatu Peak in Narkanda.

For places to see in and around Shimla see http://hptdc.nic.in/cir0103.htm

Thanks Aarosh. Is it possible to get down half-way from Shimla and then take the return train to Shimla? i.e. Take the 10.30am Himalayan Queen from Shimla get down after some 2 hours (whickever station comes) and then take the Himalayan Queen train coming from Kalka to Shimla?

regards,
Ram

You will have to look at the train timings to see if that could be possible. If you plan to do that don't you think you might be losing almost the entire day?

Thank you,

yes you can. but barog station is only accessible by walk and its approx 3-4 kms from barog. solan would be a better suited station for you.

Hi,
Thanks you for the reply. Actiually I would be staying in Barog at Hotel PInewood (HPTDC) the previous night and was planning to take the Shivalik express the next morning. Would Autos or taxis be available to drop us at Barog Station? or vehicle access is limited at Barog station? Especially with snow around it would be really difficult if we have to walk to the station with kids. Please advise.

Thank you,

regards,
Ram

Hi Ram, I hope you have already traveled to Shimla and had a great time there.

I too have a similar question as yours. Can I take a taxi from Barog station to go to the Kandaghat (10-12 KM away where I will be staying)? I am taking Rail Motor which has a stoppage only in Barog; not in any other nearby stations. So I will be getting down at Barog.

Can you please share your experience with Barog station? I am planning to pre-book a cab but the question is about the accessibility of the cab to the station. In some of the threads I had read that we have to trek 2-3 KMs to reach the road. If you have already visited the place, can you please share exact details about the accessibility of the station from the road. Also, MDR9 and NH5 which one is accessible from Barog station?
