First trip to India: booked trains from Delhi to Shimla. I have no particular plans from then on except to work my way over to Pathankot and then get the train to Amristsar.

So: any recomedations for sites/destinations along the way?

I live in the middle of New York City, and this is the first part of a month long trip, so would love to get away from crowds for a few days. I will be traveling alone.

Someone suggested Tattapani, but can find little info on it.

I'd also like to ride the Kanga Valley toy train for part/all or its route: again, any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanbks!

Take a look at this link you could do the journey I have suggested in reverse order:

Amritsar-Shimla-Dharamsala, in three weeks is this possible?

I would suggest doing the Shimla Toy Train rather than the Kangra one, there's no comparison! If you want to do the Kangra one then do it from Jogindernagar (near Mandi) to Kangra near Dharamsala, this is the most scenic part of the journey from Kangra to Pkt is OK but nothing to write home about, plus this train is verreee slooow it's much faster by road. Thumbs up Weather?

Thanks for the info KK.

One other question: I should be there in just about 1 week . What sort of weather can I expect along this route?

Thanks!

You can expect dry sunny days at this time, however heavy snows have come very early this year in the higher Himalaya's, but this shouldn't affect this route. KK

Exclamation

Please lookup in IM or internet in general for rains and road conditions around Simla. It apparently had the good beating from rain this year - and resultant problems - look here.

You can refer to www.tribuneindia.com for temperature (in C'grade) - yesterday's info is here.

Once again, I am not discouraging anyone, but just to be aware of the status - specially the OP being a first timer in India.

Please note I am not a local guy - so all my info is from newspapers, internet pages and IM. A local person probably can give the latest info.

Exclamation Weather links

Some weather links from Indian Meterological Dept (IMD) -

India Daily weather - http://www.imd.ernet.in/section/nhac/wch/todaywch.htm

Current All India Rainfall distribution - http://www.imd.ernet.in/section/nhac...c/raindist.htm

Look up Simla current weather here.

From the second link it seems no rainfall in the upper India region, esp. in HP - that's good news for Maury (should I ask for a treat ? )!

I was interested for my family tour - would be happy if it helps anyone.

@Maury - I would be at HP with my family from 3rd to 10th Oct too, but expect a little rush in known tourist places as this is festival time in Eastern India (West Bengal) and **almost all** bengalis travel during this time. I found from HPTDC website that all the other rooms were booked by my fellow east-Indians !

Hmm... not that really, because in places like Simla, you should have options in all budget ranges, so probably you can pick and choose, and less known destinations or trek routes should not be a problem at all.

In case you want to have a look at the HPTDC reservation status at their various hotels, you can look at http://www.hptdc.gov.in/custsw/viewuser8.asp.

I am attaching a screenshot for a HPTDC property at Dharamsala, that I took while typing this post from their website. This shows you have some room still, so not a very tight situation there yet. I guess other locations would be the same, you might just sample out a few other places that you would be going to.

I guess you can have a look at the various hotel reviews at IM and other sites and post your itinerary here, so that IMers may also suggest. Also preferably let IMers know your budget and inclination.

I will off from today though, best of luck for your maiden India tour!!

Thanks Again, KK!

I am figuring on a night in Shimla - after what looks like most of the day on the 2 trains to get there - and then on for a couple of days to someplace a bit less crowded. I want to end up on the Kanga Valley train, as suggedted for a part of the trip to Pathankot, stay there for a night and then the train to Amritsar (did I mention someplace here that I love trains and that riding them is a big part of the joy of this trip?). Anyway, am hoping to hit accomidations in the under 500 INR range. From the site above, looks like I can wing it, but as always, suggestions are most welcome!

See you all (metaphorically speaking) next week!!

In Shimla there are plenty of hotels & hotel touts who will drive you mad as you walk up the steep hill with your bags. To avoid them once you get off the train go to the taxi office on the other side of the road towards the town, take a taxi for the short ride to "The Lift" which takes you about 3 quarters of the way up the mall. walk up the mall towards the English style church, there is a small path between the church & the cinema that leads upto the YMCA Rs3-400.
Like I said before if you want 2 days somewhere peaceful then take a bus from Shimla to Mandi then take a 1hr bus journey to Rewalsar Lake, you'll love it!! When you get there you'll see a gateway near the bus stand that goes through to the lake area on your right you will see a Tibetan Monastery that looks over the lake stay here for Rs2-250. From Mandi you can take a bus to the railhead at Jogindernagar. KK
