Shimla to Kaza, Mid May
I was thinking of driving in a Chevrolet Tavera from Shimla to Kaza over 4 days, with halts at Thanedar, Sangla and Tabo.
What are the driving conditions like? Can a 2 Wheel Drive Vehicle with a high clearance make it in good shape? The car is almost new and in perfect shape. Samir Shah |

The point of worry is not the vehicle, its the road.
The Shimla-Tabo/Kaza road is very infamous due to frequesnt road blocks especially Yang Thang and Maling sector. Its sometimes closed in July, so the chances in may are high that it will be closed. If it so, you may to take a longer route via Banjar, which is again no good. So the safer bet would be Manali- Kaza, and in may please check that all the roads are open before leaving your home.

Please check the reply I gave to Ullas yesterday Unless the new road, that is being blasted above the landslide, just north of Yangthang, is completed by then, you won't be able to go any further with your own vehicle. I'm not sure who is responsible for the building of this road - whether it comes under the Border Roads Dept or Himachal State. It would be useful if someone on the spot in India could check out if this road is now open, or if not, find out the likely date of completion. Those travelling by motor bike can have their bikes sent across the massive landslip by cable.

I found out that the BRO has completed all but 400 metres of the road bypassing the landslide area in 2004. Hopefully, it will be complete by the time we do the trip in May this year

Thanks for the feedback samir. It sounds like they have made good progress since we were there last September.
When finished, the road will go past Nako village, very pretty, and a great place for an overnight stop. Even if the road is open though, you will have to check at Kaza that the Kunzum Pass is open, so that you join up with the main Manali - Leh road. |
