I am unsure if it is possible to do this trip in October. There is every chance that both Kunzum la and Rohtang Pass get closed by then. Even if they are not closed, you could run into rough weather. In which case you may have to retrace your path back from Kaza to Shimla (which is not a bad idea in itself).

Hi! In normal circumstances the road from Kaza to Manali is very much open in October, and well into november.Of course it can get closed anytime.

Yes high mountain pass are terribly unpredictable.

I do agree clubbing both Kinnaur and Spiti needs little luck. July to Sep is monsoon in Kinnaur where as same is supposedly best time in Spiti/lahaul. July to Sep is officially the most suitable time to cross these trans-himalayan high pass. But again one western disturbance could create havoc.

This is July 2007Old post of Voyager only)

Kunzum-La open in Late May?

This is Sept 2008 (19/20th Sep)

This is Sep 2009 (10/11 Sep)

All there were well within official time of visiting Kunzum La. But nothing Official about Mighty Himalaya

Only safer bet to me is keeping extra days in schedule and not to make this kind of trip in a very tight schedule so that you can give your best to accomodate mother nature.

I´d agree with the above : last year on October 14th BRO said that Manali-Leh travellers would be on their own from October 31st - and the road was officially closed a couple of days later. This doesn´t pinpoint the Rothang , but Rothang normally receives more snow.

The year before that the Manali-Kaza road was very much out by the end of September , before opening again :

I´ve crossed the Rothang a number of times in late September and October without major problems , but I wouldn´t take it for granted.

...drivers will start in any weather , that´s how the the people on the bus ended up spending several days in Batal. All who is comfortable with that possibility , go ahead ( but gear up , subzero nights can be taxing even in a good shelter ).

Most but not all days , sometimes in to December : in ´08 buses were running up to Keylong until December 11th. On the other hand Rothang was out around ten days total only in September last year, first around September 3rd , then around the 10th.

No in any weather they don't start, be sure of that. It happens that they leave in good weather and land in a storm and get stuck. This happened many times,at any time of the season. And even when the BRO has not officially closed the road you are stuck for days on end, rest assured, same where the clearing is left to the PWD.On these roads one ALWAYS takes his chances,as you should know.

leh.nic.in is often is extremely late in changing the road status, which has been brought up countless times in my blog and these threads - that would be the point in bringing in the other sources. None of the road closures in last September were shown on leh.nic.in, likewise not when people were evaced with helicopters from Sarchu in September 08 , or when they were waiting to bring down the dead road workers from the Rothang in November last year.

There is a roadmarker for Manali-Kaza and Manali-Keylong on hplahaulspiti.nic.in as well , works equally poor.Once these have changed ( October 19th last year )something real has happened : even when the roads open again chances will be less in your favor. The bottom line : a level of uncertainty remains , anytime : I never expect to know a exact date of arrival on these roads.

Drivers don't even know that these sites exists, and rightly so since they are useless. So what have the various nics got to do with the topic? Can one surely check them when in a place like Spiti? No,so trust your driver and hope the weather gods will be benevolent to you.
