Shimla Kalka train timings

Hi!
I will taking the Howrah Delhi Kalka express from Delhi to Kalka. It reaches Kalka at 5am. Im planning to catch the Shivalix express at 5:30. Is that possible?
How much time in advance should we wait at the station to get a seat on the Shimla-Kalka trains?
Is there any way i can book etickets in advance??

Hi Naj,

Visit the website www.indianrail.gov.in and you will get the train numbers and timings of the Kalka-Shimla route. I personally went with Kalka mail from Howrah and then boarded Shivalik Delux at Kalka. It was a beautiful experience that I cherish. Book tickets in advance otherwise you will not be able to board the train. It is very popular now. There is another Kalka-SHimla express leaving at 6:30 but the previous one (Shivalik Delux at 5:30) is better, it is the only narrow gauge Shatabdi category train in India with breakfast served en-route. It has a sitting capacity of 120.

I used the same trains in 2005 summer. They are connecting trains and Kalka Shimla Shivalik exp starts from other side of the same platform.

Book your ticket from IRCTC.

This train is the main attraction in this area.

I think its cutting it a bit too close. I dont know what is the success percentage of the Howrah express reaching destinations on time. Though the toy train leaves from all of a 100 meters away, it wont help if you miss it.

Why dont you take a bus/ cab up instead and catch it on your way down instead?

The Kalka mail has a long halt at Delhi and a long running time so as not to reach Kalka before dawn so even if it is a bit late it reaches Kalka on time.

The halt is all very well, but travelling early morning during that time of the year is plauges with "fog" problems, if the shatabdi can get delayed by close 1.5 hours on a 3 hour trip then the chances of this getting delayed are even higher.

Isnt Shiwalik Deluxe connecting train to Kalka Mail so if Kalka Mail gets delayed, the Shiwalik depature gets delayed too?

you are right .

the Shivalik Delux is the connecting link train to Kalka Mail, and from here, we often purchase tickets with reservation from Howrah to SHimla, so there is practically no chance of missing it. However, it is always better to confirm this from a railway official.

I got the 5:30am train in August this year. It is a very nice journey and the breakfast was good.

I stayed overnight in Kalka as I was travelling from Haryana, but there were passengers on the 5:30 who had travelled from Delhi.

I would buy etickets in advance. There are enough threads covering how to buy these tickets.
