You may be right about the bus routes - they try to rationalize different bus routes through different towns to cover most of the areas. The roads on all these routes are almost the same - IMHO, none would be safer than the other. I normally took a night bus from Dharamshala to Delhi, and sometimes I woke up in Una, sometimes near Bilaspur, sometimes in Mandi
. If you are driving down, you could choose the route depending on what you want to see on the way. |

Ah! I'm just in time then.
![]() Manali - who goes from Ropar to Anandpur Sahib to get to Swarghat? Turn right before entering Kiratpur town, or simply put, just follow the signs proclaiming "NH 21". Dhasa - the short route, and the really scenic route (haven't done it yet ). The scenic route wud be Swarghat-Bilaspur-Ghagas-Ghumarwin-Hamirpur-Nadaun-Ranital, a.k.a. NH 88. Fantastic road thru rolling countryside, mazaa aa gaya.Pathankot? You want to do maximum driving in the plains? Yuck ![]() |

That was me - confusing the names of Kiratpur with Anandpur ! wow! I can't believe it- i must be getting old. I lived in Una for 2 years, Sundernagar for 4, Dharamshala -2, and Bharwain - 4. It must be that subconsciously i wanted to suggest a visit to the grand Anandpur Sahib Gurudwara

Its about Night driving...b'coz I thought there was no pint in driving in Hills in the night...
Anyhow, as per the condition right now, we have to go somewhere on Saturday evening at 6 pm and come back on Monday morning. And we have to go through Punjab, as this friend of mine, has stayed for 8 years in south India, and he will kill me if I do not arrange PROPER north Indian food for him now... I guess this rules Dharamshala out...what about Shimla, can we get a hotel at 2 AM there ? |

Hell, plenty of good northie food available in Haryana and HP! Just look for a surd running a place called.......Shere Punjab. But for that short a trip I wud also suggest Shimla. You can try the Hotel Greenland on Circular Road (the back road) near Lakkar Bazar. I stayed there in '05, it was decent (small bathroom though). Big advantage is they are "on the road" - in-house parking and no bothering with coolies and hiking to the Mall. I guess their room rate is 600-700 now for a DBR. I can look for their fone no. if u like. |

But yes, Punjab, Haryana and HP (Or better said Erstwhile Punjab) is heaven for food lovers...on other highways we have to spot the good places, but on these roads the good places spot you... Quote:

You can try hotel holiday home as well..see this link
http://www.ashextourism.com/hotelsre...olidayhome.htm The hotel is Holiday Home..a 5 minute walk from the lift and the mall...tourism setup..the last room is 800 only ..might be worth it to take this...better and safer that some of the other hotels which you will find. |

Nope , this is fine. Like i mentioned the Ambala - Zirakpur stretch is bad (or was 5 months back) so be careful..45Km's, single carriage basically..

I wonder if the Dhulkot-Lalru section of NH 22 going north is open now. It wasn't last Oct, one had to do a short detour thru Ambala city near the RS. The rest of the way was ok, barring the mess at Zirakpur itself. According to what the locals told me then, it shud be finished by now.
It's possible to avoid all this by not entering Punjab at all, directions here. But only if the flyover down the road is ready (shud be) otherwise you're taking a chance with the railway crossing. The turn-off point is called Shahabad Markanda, with an HSIDC board saying "INDUSTRIAL GROWTH CENTRE AND AGRO PARK SAHA". Check here if the flyover is open. If the first route is open/ok, I wud probably use that for night-driving due to better lighting. |
