Sangla Valley Advice

Hi, has anyone been to Sangla Valley?
we're planning to be there in about 10-12 days. Are there any interesting but also safe treks that could be done without a guide?
How is it with accommodation - is there enough for the number of tourists that come there in June-July?
And..is there any way to get from Chitkul/Sangla down to Uttaranchal without travelling back to Khadrala Rohru?

hi, thanks for the replies. our budget is rather low - we thus plan to stay at budget accomodations as much as possible..let's say, 200-300Rp per day. is it real?




and..is it possible to rent a tent in one city and trek to another and give it back somewhere there, or must we only return to the city of our departure?
and what is this trek from sangla valley to uttaranchal like? how many does do we need?

They charge approx 300-400 per day and its the best hotel in that range in Sangla.
The best trek that you can do on your own is Sangla-sangla kanda trek.

1. I haven't stayed in the Debbhumi Regency, but stayed in their sister hotel at Sarahan, which wasn't great. Check it out.

2. In that price range I can suggest the Sangla Guest House. Nice location near the bazar, but not so close so that u get all the noise. Their low-season price is 300 though. Depending on how many days u stay, u cud negotiate for a good price. Nice people running the place and the rooms are decent and clean. Only reason I didn't stay there was that it wud have been too cold end-Oct for my travelling partner (mom), becos it's exposed on all sides and the cold winds come fairly roaring down the Baspa valley. But that won't be a problem in July.

3. The Baspa Guest House has cheap rooms too, but not worth it in my opinion. Plus a major disadvantage is that it's right on the main road with an iron bridge 70 m away, which makes a loud rumbling noise every time a vehicle moves over it, so every few seconds.

4. There's also the Mount Kailash Hotel with rooms in that range. I saw their 500-rupee rooms, which weren't great. Plus the management has a bad attitude in my opinion - end-Oct with half the place empty, it was take-it-or-leave-it. Well, check it out anyway.

Any equipment u hire has to be generally returned at the same place, unless u make arrangements with a big operator, who wud probably be more expensive. Best is to hire somewhere like Delhi in that case, which u are likely to return to (if I've guessed your plan right, Shimla/Rampur wud be ruled out in that case).
It's a 3-4 day walk to Uttaranchal (Supin/Tons valley), depending on your fitness.

Deb bhumi regency was the cleanest and best hotel in that range i checked the above mentioned hotels as well but they werent that good.

vlaky... your questions are already answered by others .. I did once walk from Sangla to Chitkul in Mid-april ...the scenery was awsome... there was snow on the road then.

A last year's post on Sangla calls it a mess with dam construction, too many vehicles, plastic litter.
Is that a fair description of Sangla?. Does the dam work degrade the visitor experience significantly?.

The dam-works end at the reservoir 2 km down-stream from Sangla at Kuppa. The mess is more on the Wangtu to Karchham stretch of the Satluj and at the sangam of Satluj/Baspa, stretching a few km up the Baspa. I wudn't say that the experience is significantly degraded though. Once in Sangla and beyond one can pretend the works don't exist, which is difficult down-stream from the reservoir becos the Baspa is a mere trickle till it reaches the sangam.

It's true that Sangla altho small has more than it's share of cars and litter. Personally I think the other villages around and upstream are much nicer - Kamru (no accom), Batseri (tent resort river-side), Rakchham (1 hotel), Mustrang (tent resort river-side) and Chhitkul (basic accom).

Vlaky, Sangla is beautiful but little crowded. If u stay at Sangla, Visit the next beautiful village- Batseri. U,ll be amazed by its planning lay-out n civic sense of the villagers. As mentioned by Rishabh, Sangla-kanda is a good option. Try going ahead of the kanda lake n reach the pasture up there. Chhitkul, is better option to stay 'coz it is less crowded, prettier n offer cheaper accomodation (INR 150-300 approx) than Sangla. If u find difficulty in getting accomodation, u can take help from ITBP people at Chhitkul. If in Chhitkul, trek to Parvati-Kund (about 14 kms).

Hey, u'll b going from Delhi n most probably coming back to delhi too. So, Why don't u hire equipments from delhi itself?

Lamkhaga, Chotakhaga, Borasu, Kimilay Passes connects Chhitkul to Uttaranchal. However, treks through any of these passes are difficult. Rupin and Buran passes will lead u to Uttaranchal from Sangla. Buran trek is relatively easier than Rupin as it is more in use by the locals.

I walked 3-4 times but from CHITKUL to SANGLA and this was always a memorable walk. After crossing over the pass-we used to stay overnight at CHITKUL but sometimes bus had not come...and sometimes we need to have a walk...just for fun. There was bus for SHIMLA at 10.30 AM and we used to reach well in time to catch.

I am not sure you will be able to handle gear part of your question- everyone will be asking you for an advance for it [ If someone will be having gear there which I am not sure someone will have ] and returning gear in another city is again requires good money as you will be paying travel expenses of that guy + your own money also.
