Planning road trip from Simlaand going through Kalpa - Tabo - Kaza - Lossar - Chandrataal - Rohtang Pas - Manali - Tirthan Valley - Simla.

Need advice for :

1. When is the road aza - Kumzum la - Manali likely to open this year.
2. What are the recommended places for accommodation after Kalpa.
3, I plan to hire a veichle from Simla. What vehicle will be suitable. Innova/Scorpio/ 4-wheel or 2 wheel drive etc. etc ?
4. Contact details of reliable driver/car hire agency used by members.
5.We are looking for two more persons, preferably couple to share expenses.
6. Total time for trip 10/12 days
7.Trip to start from 10 or 11 June '17 from Simla.

1. Maybe April.
2. Nako. There are lovely camps. Knaygoh Kinner Camps, you could try. Find them online, call, and book.
3. Scorpio should be good, though local people in Spiti are happily driving Maruti altos. 4x4 is always always better.
4. Try Zoomcar or the like?
5. NA
6 and 7 : you may want to extend the trip a bit. This may be very short time. There is too much to see.

Important: Visit you doctor before you go, ask for altitude sickness symptoms and medicines. Carry general medicines for headache, fever, cold, cough etc. Carry plenty of dry food with you. There are long stretches of road with nothing to eat and you may be stuck in landslides. We were, for 3 hours, around lunch time. Luckily we had food.

My piece of mind - Kunzum generally opens by last week of May or first week of June. Vehicles with high ground clearance are always recommended, you may witness the reason when you travel the stretch between Batal-Chhatru-Gramphu. Extend the travel plan for 2/3 days since you will be gaining altitude level at a faster pace as per you plan which might lead to altitude sickness and also you will be travelling more with little to enjoy.

Cheers!!!

Hi,

1. Kunzum La opens only after mid-June. At the moment the pass is closed due to heavy snowfall and by the time BSF bulldozers get to 4000 Meters to clean the blocked roads it will be June. So ideal time to transverse the Spiti Lahaul circuit is between 20th June to 30th July. And after rains i.e. 1st Oct to 10th Nov '17. Post this winter starts.

2. Recommended Route & Hotels: Shimla > Sarahan (HPTDC - Hotel Shrikhand) > Kalpa (HPTDC - Kailash Cottage) > Tabo (Hotel Towdhey) > Kaza (HPTDC - Kaza, The Spiti) > Losar (Nomads Cottage) > Manali.

Note: You can book HPTDC hotels in advance on their online website. For others you can use cleartrip or makemytrip.

3. You can hire a vehicle from Shimla there are many operators. Innova is the top option; Scorpio is also good. When you book do inform them that while coming from Losar to Manali via Kunzum on your final leg you shall leave early morning (3 am) and take a detour to Chandrataal also. Take a confirmed agreement on this! Contacts: Saveen Kumar – 098163 11768 | Kuldeep Kumar – 09817075643 | Vinkle – 09459262520 (Bargain hard with these folks and get everything confirmed properly)

4. If you have time, you can also stay a day or 2 at the Dhankar Monastery which falls between Kaza and Tabo. There are plenty of locally run guest houses.

5. As you are starting from Shimla side, increase in height is gradual so that will help you acclimatize properly.

Br,
Amit

Here is my 2 cents again - Last year, Kunzum opened in the last week of May, though it's not necessary that this year it will be in May as well. Also, Dhankar Monastery fall between Tabo and Kaza, infact it's not on the main roads and you have to travel few KMs to reach that. What falls between Kaza to Losar is the spectacular Kye Monastery.

Thanks for pointing out the typo. Agree with the weather part, varies from year to year; preferable to plan the trip June onwards.

Do visit Key/Kibber Gompas, a bit of a detour after Kaza but worth the visit if you have additional days.

Thank you theloststory, Ghosal, and Amitgaja. Sorry for the late acknowledgement. Yes we will extend our time by a few days. How do you get a confirmed itenary from the vehicle people over the phone and how reliable are they. Do I have to pay in advance?

As far as I'm concerned, I prepare my own itinerary based on my likings and then ask the vehicle people to follow that. But yes, before I conclude, the take their views on places where I'm planning to visit since they know better than me and even than google as they visit those places very often and with tourist mostly, so they are versed with the core area of interest of people like us. There are people who may not be punctual or that smart as expected but I haven't heard of getting cheated from these people reason being that this are their means of living. You may pay 1-2k as token advance but in all probability you will find that they wouldn't be than keen to get the advance.

Cheers!!!
