In an hastily taken decision, we three friends, decided to drive to Kasol . Here's the first draft of itinerary:

8th, Friday: Leave 4 am. Reach Kasol by 6 pm. Rest.
9th, Saturday: Have a small trek.
10th, Sunday: Trek to Kheerganga and back by evening.
11th, Monday: Leave 10 am.

My questions are:
1) Is Honda City a good enough car to take on this route?
2) Where should we stay? Something in nature and quite would be preferred rather than something in middle of market and noise.
3) Is there a short trek we can do on day 1?

Thanks in advance for your replies.

1) Yes
2) I liked Alpine - it's by the river. Sunshine GH has been recommended here as well. You may look at Sandhya if you're prepared to shell out a bit.
3) I dont think you'd have the energy for that but if you do, Chalal is nearby.

9th and 10th dont make sense. You cannot trek to Kheerganga and back on the same day. Overall, I'd recommend the following:

On the 8th, sleep in Kasol.
9th early morning, leave for the village of Tosh and park there. Start the hike. Reach Kheerganga and overnight stay.
10th, come back from Kheerganga to Tosh and then possibly visit Manikaran or just relax in Kasol for a bit.
11th - start back for Noida.

Good luck!

Hi Vaibhav,

Sorry to intrude on this thread but I had a similar plan and had posted on a separate thread which I have quoted below:

"I will be travelling solo to kasol from Delhi on 6th June and planning to come back on 11th. From Kasol, I also plan to trek to Malana and Rasol. Though the forums have provided some valuable information, I had a few more doubts I hope someone might be able to help me out with.

In order to trek to Malana from Kasol, what should be the starting point....Jari? And since I'm planning to trek alone, is it advisable to do this by myself or I should perhaps get a local to accompany me? How long does the trek last?

After this first leg of trek and spending a night at Malana, can I go to Rasol from there and then heading back to Kasol?

Quite a few people have shown apprehensions about travelling alone to these places. Is it justified? "

Though Kullukid has provided me some information, I had a couple of more questions hoping you would be able to answer them?

1. Is it safe to trek solo from Jari to Malana and then from Malana to Rasol?

2. This being peak season, will it be troublesome to find a cheap budget hotel for backpackers in Kasol and Malana?

Thanks in advance!

Khargosh_hamster:

1. It's safe. Do not carry or attempt to carry back what grows around you. It's a bit eerie as in many parts you wont find a lot of people but it's safe. I did not visit the village (malana). Perhaps ping NeerajJatji - he seems to trek a bit in those parts.

2. I doubt it ... In the worst case, you can always go to manikaran sahib and find lodging in the gurudwara. I'm assuming since you are out hiking, you're ok with roughing it out a bit.

On your other points - the trek from Jari to Malana is 10+ hours. The best way to cut it down to just about 4 hours is to take a car from kasol that would drop you to the dam below (the malana hydel power project). Then just hike uphill. It's a steep charge though ('twas 1300/- one way or both back in september, should be more now).

Someone mentioned there's a 'dragon' guest house in malana. Very basic but should work.

I'm not at all familiar with the route over Rasol jot- I didnt even see it when I was in manikaran. Hopefully someone else will come along and advise.

I think you are probably referring to Sunshine GH in Manali not Kasol.

Is it safe? many dead bodies of travellers have been found in Kullu/Parvati valleys over last 20yrs,but usually westerners,so probably safe for Indians.KK
SOS: Missing Person...

Please look at this thread: http://www.indiamike.com/india/uttar...012-a-t159252/

He could be anywhere now: You might have met him, be able to help, or give information.

Thanks for your input. I read somewhere on this forum that Kheerganga-and-back was doable in 1 day.

Would I find a place for safe overnight parking?

I believe I can't book anything in Kheerganga over internet/phone?

Plenty. There're three good hotels in / near kasol. Himalayan resort, Alpine and Sandhya. The gurudwara at Manikaran has a multilevel parking!!

@ kullukid - yes, I mixed that one up with the manali option. There is a lower budget guest house as one approaches alpine from the road. I don't remember the name - didnt like it much but plenty of low budget acco there, it's definitely not a problem to find a place I think.

What do you mean "book anything"? Last i heard there are no places/GH's to stay at in Kheerganga, there are tea stalls where you can have makeshift beds overnight, also some Baba's stay there who may let you share there small huts.

Also facilities/GH's in Malan are/were very poor & extremely dirty when i was there around 5yrs ago.

Wow! That changes everything. I am all for aching legs than dirty beds. Can we make it back to Kasol(or someplace else with clean accommodation), if start early from Kasol? We three are in good physical condition

PS: We don't have sleeping bags.

If you set off from Dam project early morn it's 3hrs walk up up up to Malana, so you could walk there & back in 1 day,but be warned unless you are a regular trekker your legs will be aching to the extreme for the next day or 2. You could stay at Kalga & walk to Kheerganga & back in a day if you set off early, this is a much easier walk & it would make sense to do this first to strengthen your legs for Malana climb.
If you want somewhere very shanti to stay in Kasol for around RS100 then check out Bhandari family GH they also have very cheap home cooked evening meals,it's hidden away in orchards up some steps opposite Sanhya hotel car park & there is a place to park a couple of cars on the GH side,although that is on the main road.See post 14 here;

Since Malana is not on my list, I guess it makes sense to stay at Kalga.

Is it motor-able?
Can you please suggest a decent place to stay?

On the way back, I will stay at Bhandari Family GH for my one day stay at Kasol.

Oh sorry confused you with khargosh, it's motorable as far as Bershani where the road ends, kalga is 20min walk up hill, you would have to arrange to leave your car in the care of one of the tea stall or shopkeepers ar Bershani,if possible. it may make more sense to leave the car at Kasol or Mnikaran & take the 1hr bus journey from M'karan to Bershani.KK

OK I read a bit about Kheer Ganga and it looks like it should not be missed.

So I like vaibhav's plan about parking in Tosh. My only doubt remains, if I carry clean sheets with me, would I be able to get a less-than-filthy accommodation, bedding at Kheerganga?

I'd recommend going to stikage in delhi and getting yourself an all weather sleeping bag. It's about 1K and will be very useful in many situations. If you want something better finished, consider wildcraft.

^^ I don't think I have time for that. I am leaving in 2 days for now. Any other alternative?
