road from shimla to spiti
I would like to travel on september from shimla about rekong peo to spiti. But i was reading that a part of the road is broken down and we have to walk or climb a bit. Is it dangerous or very hard to walk this way? Because when the way is very narrow and steep i get maybe problems with the height.
Thanks for your informations. ![]() |

Fancy a ride ?

...well, if I remember it right , that picture is from 2004.When I tried to get there , in 2005 , the Pare Chu flood wave had ripped away a lot more than just this cableway at Malling - which has been a constant , nagging problem area for the BRO. Vaguely remember some news story about rerouting past Malling, but can´t place it for the moment. Have been thinking about collecting & organising the news stories about the Hindustan-Tibet Road in the same as the roads to Leh, but I probably won´t get around to it before leaving for India in two weeks time (wooho !) . Judging from other parts of HT road : dangerous , no , requiring some tolerance for heights , yes. The site from which the picture came is a great resource on Spiti & Kinnaur : www.masterlyinactivity.com

Nothing of that sort, there is now a different route that people use and Malling Nallah is all but closed. Once you enter Kinnaur Valley the roads become a little rough due to all the landslides that happen there, but nothing too serious.
Here is the trip log of my trip to Spiti Valley in June (heavy page), Spiti, where “ROAD” is a relative term… |

I came back from Spiti a few weeks back and i can assure you that the Kinnaur route is far better than manali route towards Spiti which for 70-80 odd km. has nothing but boulders on a narrow dirt track, one hell of a ride.
