Renuka Mela

Does anyone know the precise dates for the Renuka Mela in November, 2007?

The best we've been able to find are vague references to the fair taking place "in November," but we believe it's only a week-long event.

More info: further research suggests it's a fifteen day fair beginng on the eleventh day after Diwali. Since Diwali 2007 is on 9 November, it looks like the Renuka Mela must be from ±20 November to 5 December. Can anyone confirm this?

Has anyone been there? Is it a gas?

This fair is celebrated in the month of November for six days in district Sirmaur. It starts ten days after the famous Diwali festival. The legend goes that Parshuram, the youngest son of mother Renuka, used to visit his mother every year. The fair commemorates the annual meeting of Parshuram and Renuka. Parshuram is believed to be the sixth incarnation of Lord Vishnu. One can see the glimpses of hill culture at the fair. Rural people market their produce of walnuts, dried and wet ginger ect. Folk dances, magic show, Kariyala play, thoda dance, wrestling bouts, fire works, police and homeguard's band display, developmental exhibitions, cinema shows and bhajan-kirtan are other attractions of the week long fair. It is a state fair.

Thanks for the great photos. It looks like you took them on November 12, 2005. The calendar shows that Diwali in 2005 was on Nov 13.

If what we learned is correct about the timing for the fair after Diwali, we are confused.

Do you recall when you were there in relation to Diwali and the fair?

hfot2, This mela takes place on the Shukla Paksha Ekadshi of Kartik month. I mean it will be on eleventh day after each Diwali, This year Ekadshi is falling on November 21st. Any other info needed?

If we arrive in Renuka on November 24, will the mela still be in progress and worth seeing?

I dont think you will find much. the mela is a very small local affair. Although you will get to see only local people and of adjoining Disstts. of Punjab and Haryana, but there will not be any show-case type of thing of the local culture. It is a small place surrounded by hills and gets very dirty during the Mela. but I have been told (I didnt stay for night)that some cultural programmes are organised in the evening.

As far as I know this is not the popular Mela, but such festivals are always very revered and full of excitement for the local populace. I think that if the concerned tourism departments can take charge of organizing these local fares, we can add more tourism materials for visiting domestic as well as International tourists. Am I right?

Diwali 2005 was definitely on 1 Nov '05, so with the 11-day period, those fotos wud be from the 1st day of the fest.

PS: Diwali 2004 was on 13 Nov.

I do not know about mela but can say this is great place. Had been there years back and liked coolness of this place.
