Thanks Khaadu75 for your instant message and reassuring words.
Also any suggestions for night halts . I am thinking of The Hatu at Narkanda & then towards Manali through Shoja.

The road to Jallori from Ani is in a much better condition than towards Shoja till Jibhi. Crossing over in a car is no problem. I travel in my 800 often on this road and there has been never a problem. Though watch out for the road till Jibhi from the pass.

The Jalori Pass is very fragile and is suspect to closure due to lanslides esp. during rains. However in October, it should be open as there is no rain or snow during that time. We tried from the Shoja/ Kullu side last August but it was closed due to landslide in Khanag. But its really green & forested. Am attaching a few snaps....

Hi Pas,

I think u shud go ahead with ur plan for the Jalori Pass. That time its mot raining and it shud be open. Moreover u wud be able to see blue iris flowers in full bloom turning the whole valley BLUE.

Love this thread

I have been to HP the last 2 Octobers running (Shimla/Manali in '05, Kinnaur in '06) and have been trying to fit in a drive over the Jalori since then, without success. Have talked to whoever I cud about the route (bus-drivers, hotel staff, even a cop from Ani at the Kullu Dashehra!) and gleaned some info, but nothing like what I just picked up here in the last 10 min. So a big thanks especially to Dhananjay, khaadubhai, and AndreasW for the great info and pics.
Andreas - LOVE the pics of Jalori Just the kind that makes a guy WANT to drive on that road, even tho the pics clearly say - DON'T!

But Now I have problems of Indecision.
I was actualy planing to pass throug this route from Shimla to Manali.

I am to reach Shimla By Shivalik Deluxe (14-jUNE)
Night halt at Shimla,
Next night halt at Narkanda / Khanag / Shoja ?
And pass through Jalori & Shoja towards Manali .
All this by hired Taxi from Shimla ( Indica / maruti/ Alto etc.)

Now I need Advise from experts If I am to go through this route or follow any other route.

( The land slide pictures look scarry)
I had exactly the same decision to make in Oct '05 - Shimla to Manali via Jalori Pass or via Mashobra/Tattapani? I chose the latter becos it's shorter. I'm not going to tell u to go or not go via Jalori (as I said in an earlier post, I want to drive it myself), that's something u have to decide, but since u asked, here's info on the 2nd route. This road holds no surprises - a pretty steady drop down to the Satluj via Mashobra/Naldehra/Basantpur/Suni, cross the river at Tattapani (take a sulphur bath here if u want to), then a steady climb past Alsindi/Dharmaur/Rohanda to Rohanaglu, turn right here, down again to Chail Chauk, and from there take the Ganai-Gohar-Pandoh road, where u'll rejoin the Chandigarh-Manali highway, a.k.a NH21. The last stretch of road (Ganai to Pandoh) is not great but acceptable, and avoids having to drive thru Mandi and all that highway traffic, besides being shorter. The whole stretch Mashobra-Pandoh is not a very fast road, but quite scenic, altho I suspect the Jalori route is more so. Shortly before Basantpur, u'll be surrounded by trees and see the Satluj making a wide U-shape in the valley below you.
We left late from Shimla and only got as far as Aut that day, but if u leave early enough u can make it to Manali, or at least till Kullu or Naggar. I mention Naggar becos HPTDC has turned the Fort into one of their hotels and it's quite a nice setting, at least for a day/nite. And the room rates are reasonable. U might also like to visit the Roerich Museum up the road.
If u go via Jalori and want to spend only one night en-route, I wud not suggest staying at Narkanda since it's only 60 km/2 hours from Shimla, maybe Shoja or Khanag wud be better. But I have no idea about the accom options there. There is a nice hotel though at Sainj, overlooking the Satluj. This is where the "Jalori Road" to Aut "officially" starts.

Thank You dilliwala for the excellent info about Tattapani & Jalori routes towards Manali. ( Sorry for the delay in thankin you).
I was unable to follow either of the routes as it had rained heavily during my June-07 visit to Shimla- Manali & Taxi drivers were unwilling to take me through . So I had to go via the normal route through Bilaspur.
But for the sake of future travellers, very few taxi drivers are eager to go via Jalori pass to Manali. I had a tough time in Shimla finding a taxi to take me through Jalori pass towards Manali. So I decided to skip Jalori pass for a future visit.

( Dilliwala, i follow all your threads about uttarakhand and am mighty impressed about your knowledge about hill roads. You are like a encyclopedia of these roads).

Hillywala? Hila dala?

I take hillwala as a real compliment, specially when it comes from a genuine hillwala like you.

Well, as an honorary hillwala, you hardly qualify as a duplicate!
And thank you too for the compliment.
