Dear Arun,

As far as my past exp , i think the going rates this season for one seat in that Taxi from Manali to Leh would be around 1000 to 1100/-. Also the taxi genrally stop at Sarchu, which is otherwise not recommened.. Taxi's genrally dont stop much in bewtween, Someone had rightly mentioned them as Canon balls in the earlier thread.
I personally feel that Himachal toursim bus is a better Option. rest u make up for ur mind. also if u can hire a complete cab it would cost u some where around 10K. In that way u can ask the driver to go as per your Norms, somewhat

Hi All,
I just spoke on the phone to HPTDC in Manali (01902) 252116. They said their bus service will begin in July. He gave me the number of HRTC (01902) 252323 and this guy said that he can't say for sure about the Manali-Leh bus until he gets word from Keylang.

Since I want to leave Manali for Leh on June 1st, you think I'm going to have a problem catching a bus? What other vehicle can I catch? Cost and frequency?
Thanks,
Arijit

You could take a share jeep from Manali, front seat Rs1200 middle Rs 1000 rear Rs 800 (not recommended unless you are a sardine!) KK

Ha Ha Kullukid,
That would be so apt, because I love sardines!

Are these jeeps the ones (in)famous for the cannonball runs?

I for got to mention that the HRTC guy also said that the Manali-Leh road is still closed. Is it true? I'd read somewhere here that it opened a few days back.

Kullukid, the picasa links don't work. showing an error. please resend.

P.S. Where do I find these taxis/jeeps/tempo traveller etc in Manali?
Do they stop overnight at Keylang?

Your guy seems not quite in touch with the situation : the road has been officially open (i.e. bus worthy ) , since the 17th , the first light vehicles went across on May 2nd , and the first HRTC bus run Keylong-Manali was on May 10th, from what I can see.

The taxis/jeeps usually do one of two options : either the cannonball run , often around 20 hrs more or less non.stop to Leh, or with a night stop at "The Vomit Hilton" , i.e. the tent camps at Sarchu , some seven hundred meters higher than Leh. The cannonball run is actually preferable from the safety aspect ( if you don´t factor in the exhausted drivers ) because you don´t sleep higher than Leh , but nobody can guarantte it works out this way : once you go past Darcha you can end up anywhere between 3500 and 4500 meters sleeping altitude.

You´ll find some practical pointers on the road and altitude sickness here

Any travel agent in Manali can arrange it for you or just go to the taxi stand in New Manali main street & ask a driver. KK

Guys,
Another question. What is the distance between Karu and Leh? Is the army camp right next to the highway in Karu?

Hey Guys,
I reached Leh last night. The HRTC bus journey was so tough, but so worth it. I'm glad I did it. I'll post a trip report and some pictures after I get back to 'civilization'
