Minkashi Chaudhry's book is nice indeed..my only growse is that I dont think she has travelled through all areas she's written about. I am sceptical when it comes to using such books as trek guides..the reality often is way different from the print..

Just adding to what cleverest said

The route through Rohali is the shorter route no doubt and definitely the easier.
Rohali - Seol - purthi sachkhas (cheir) - killar . The route follows the chandra bhaga river and you do not cross any mountain (theoritically there is zero chance of getting lost)

The route though Atholi goes like this
Atholi (golabghar) - shol - estoari - darwas - killar . This too follows the chandra bhaga river - and you do not cross any mountain(theoritically there is zero chance of getting lost)

The last route to killar is a killer - but is more beautiful - do not do is alone -without a guide
Trella - bandodi - satrundi - sach - dunai - vrindavani - killar
This follows the trella stream only for a while and you cross mountain. There is 200 % chance of you getting lost or killed if you try to do it alone without a guide. And you need to be very fit . From satrundi to sach you will have to gain 5500 feet over a 5 km stretch!!!.

As for the season - August is the best - the pass will have snow but the rest will be free of snow.

All information here is from personal experience of one avid trekker "Pradeep De Sarkar"

AAAAHHHHH!! missed that bike in the thread

Let me see if I can get the road route and I will reply back.

About the passes - most of the passes in ladakh - upper himachal - open up by May end - June beginning. Safe and best bet is the month of August.

Thumbs up Road route avoiding Pathankot

Chandigarh Kiratpur Mandi....

Or take the scenic mountain route.. C'garh, Shimla, Bilaspur, Mandi

Mandi, Baijnath, Palampur...

Palampur, Gaggal, Shahpur

From Shahpur, again two options.... take the main road to Nurpur or take the mountain road to Shihunta and Lahru. Lahru, Chuari, Khajjiar, Chamba.

In case you take the main road to Nurpur, there are two options fm Nurpur.

Main road: Nurpur, Chakki, Dhar, Tunuhatti, Banikhet, Chamba.

Mountain road: Nurpur, Lahru, Chuari, Khajjiar, Chamba.

From Chamba to Tissa and Trailla by road.... that's the end for wheels. Maybe there is a kuchchaa road upto Satraundi.

From Satraundi trek across the 4390m Sach pass to reach Killar in two days. Killar is in the Pangi Valley.

If you wanna go to Killar by road, you have to wait for the Rohtang Pass above Manali to open. [approx 14th May??}

Route is... Manali, Rohtang Pass, Tandi, Udaipur, Purthi, Sach Khas, Killar.

Buy the Himachal Tourism Map from their tourist office [40 rs, i think]

I have always wanted to do this sort of biking thru the mounains... but don't get enuff time to trek AND bike... [trek is 1st priority]

All the best!!! Happy biking!!!

Came across this thread recently. I know for a fact that Minakshi lived in Pangi for at least an year. Her information is likley to be quite accurate. I believe her husband helped write it, and he is one of the most travelled guys in that area (be it on foot, mule or jeep).

Chamba - Killar Highway via Saach (Sach) Pass

Highest road in state gets bus service

Chamba, October 23
The Satrundi-Bagotu portion of the 167-km Chamba-Killar highway was declared fit for plying of bus service over the 14,500-foot Saach Pass, the highest road in the state.

Andreas, my guide told me [15 sept 2006] that we could do the trip by jeep... but it would have taken nearly 14 to 16 hours from Trilokinath to Chamba... and I had to reach Manali the next day... so for some other day...

Been there.. done that :-)

Was in Himachal in Oct and hence did a small ride to Pangi valley. Went uptill Saach Pass and turned back.

A friend of mine has done the complete circuit - Manali - Keylong - Killar - Saach pass - Chamba

The roads are still in pathetic condition... ( that i can also vouch from my trip to Saach pass )

Any specific infor that you need. Pls ask.
