Pangi Valley
Just wondering if anyone has any info on Killar in the Pangi valley or on the trek from Keylong to Killar. Seems to be a very little discussed region of Himachal Pradesh.

There is a regular trekking route from Killar to Udaipur. Between Udaipur and Keylong you'll probably have to take a vehicle; else follow the circuitous trek route via Alyas, Chobia pass, Hadsar, Khardu and Shansha.
Killar has rest houses of the PWD, for accomodation.

Thanks SHIMLA. Have any details on what Killar and the Pangi Valley are like? How they compare to other regions of Himachal? If Killar is somewhere that one might want to spend some time, or if it is better just to pass through? Also, anyone know how to get from Chamba to Killar?

bansuri,
You have the option of bussing it to Killar from Chamba, or trekking via Tissa, Devi Khoti, Alyas and Mindhal village. I've never trekked in this area, so cannot compare it with the other regions of H.P. We have on this forum a very knowledgable trekking expert by the username AvidTrekker; I'm sure he'll answer all your questions on trekking. Do send him a PM. |

Have not personally been tp Pangi valley.
Among acquaintances, Harish Kapadia has. He's written many books. Two trekkers also have been there around 1986. So even their info may not be up to date. If you have specific questions, I can ask them and revert back on the forum. I have the relevant maps for Keylong to Killar, even they are pretty old [pre 1980]

I have not been topangi valley myself but the region does fascinate me..perhaps becuase their is so little that we know about it.
Pangi does have several treks that could be done, most start from Killar. Many of these treks are of short duration and easy in nature. One culd trek to Hudan lake, Parmar valley, Chask Bhatori or Sural valley..all from Killar. One difficult trek I have read about is from Sural to Killar across Tingloti pass..but even this is a two day drek..and can be done only from August to October.. Considering the remoteness of the area and lack of popularity, I am very apprehensive about the kind of support and facilities that will be available in Killar. So if anyone does plan to visit the Pangi valley, then one, do a lot more reasearch and two, GO WELL PREPARED |

MT Bro: Good luck with your plans..and as I had said..be well prepared..
The road if I have t right would be such: Chamba - Pathhankot - Udhampur - Kud - Patnitop- Batote -Kishtwar - Atholi - Gulabgarh - Killar. Yu can reach Killar from Camba in a day..the road goes all along the Chandrabhaga river and is supposedly an all weather road. Again, I am not very sure of this info as I havent been that way myself. |

http://hpchamba.nic.in/destPangi.htm talks about three alternative routes..take you pick..
"The valley can be approached through different routs. One route is through Chamba side when one has to cross difficult passes i.e. either Sach pass with an altitude of 14,478 feet or Cheni pass with an altitude of 14,382 feet. this route is the shortest for those attempting from Churah and Chamba side. These passes remain snow-clad for most part of the year and it is only for a small period in summer that one can attempt them. Even during summer , much caution and care has to be exercised while crossing the passes. The weather is unpredictable and the tracks are dangerous , mostly on glaciers. There is always an impending fear of avalanches enroute. Perhaps for the reasons of risks involved, a funeral allowance used to be granted to the employees serving in Pangi by the Rajas as their survival was never a met of certainty. The other route is via Lahaul. This route has been opened through road and a Jeep can ply right up to killar, The headquarters of Pangi valley in fair weather i.e. in summer. The route is comparatively easier even if attempted on foot from Rohli. This distance involved is just 45 kilomatres. Still another route is through Kistwar (part of J&K State). Distance involved is much larger by this route. Killar is 116 kilometers for on-foot journey from Kistwar. The road link has now been provided and small vehicles can ply from this side up to the boundary of Pangi. This route has of late acquired more dangerous ramifications owing to terrorist activities in the area" |

I would also suggest buying the book my Minakshi Choudhury before heading for Pangi. I have read a little of the book is a very informative and gives you all that you need to know. I believe this is one part of India where you NEED to do some wholesome reading from a book rather than rely on cuts and pieces on blogs or travelogues - because very few have actually done it . But - from what I got from the little I read that book - its beauty will blow your bind away. So do wear a helmet! and please please post the pictures once you are back so we know what it is like.
