non-touristy Himachal holiday options in end October?

Hi everyone,

I have been going through the threads in this forum...A friend of mine is coming down to Delhi from Mumbai and we want to go to the hills for 2-3 days in end October. Suggestions for places that aren't tourist traps will be welcome... I've already been to Manali, Kulu, Binsar and Ranikhet..

Looking forward to some suggestions!

You can try Fagu as well, the advantage, that its not crowded, and Shimla, Chail and Kufri are just 1 hrs away.

Whenever I go to that region, I stay either at HPTDC Hotel Fagu (http://www.wheelsandroads.com/album/Fagu/index.php) or Chail Palace Cottages

shash, it's approx 360 km from Delhi to Chakrata via Mussoorie (285 + 75). It's probably faster via Herbertpur and Kalsi, but that route is too complicated for me to bend my mind around. The straightest route wud involve bad stretches of road into Saharanpur and secondary roads upto Herb'pur, or going via Dehradun on the Chakrata Road (NH 72) to Herb'pur. Some folks prefer going to Paonta Sahib via NH 1, from where Herbertpur is a short hop across the river. Evenso, there is the problem of the one-way system from Kalsi to Chakrata and v.v., and if one doesn't time it right, a wait of 2 hours cud be involved (the gates open every 2.5 hours). From Mussoorie there is no prob with the OW system, just that the road is not good some of the way. But u get to see some good scenery on the way and there's not much traffic between Yamuna Pul and Chakrata.

No doubt the stretch can be done in one day, but I wud take the opportunity to have a night-halt at Muss.
Another poss wud be to stay in Muss overnight on the way up, and do Chakrata-Kalsi-Delhi direct on the way back, espesh as u'll be able to fine-tune the timing with regard to the gate-opening.

Day visit only, but nice quiet place, especially away from the bazar. Nice walks around. The PWD bungalow at Craignano (near the horticulture-research station) has a very nice garden, ideal for a picnic or just lazing about a bit.
