Greetings all,
I have just shifted to Delhi, and have some work in HP, in a small town outside Kalka, on a Monday (@10 am) in a few weeks (late June); trying to squeeze in a trip to Shimla with some visiting guests that preceeding weekend. Questions: 1. Does anyone know of flights from Delhi-Shimla on a Friday evening or early Saturday morning? 2. How long would Shimla-Kalka take by hired car/taxi, and how much approx(Monday morning)? 3. Do people recommend, given time is short, we just take our car or rent a car from Delhi? Train seems to take a lot of time, but how (scary) are the roads from Delhi? Is driving time to Shimla 8 hours or so or worse? Many thanks for any suggestions!! ![]() Last edited by limaye : Jun 26th, 2005 at 10:58. |

Hello limaye, and welcome to the forum!
1. As you wish to leave on a Friday evening, you can do so comfortably by the overnight Howrah-Kalka Mail from Delhi Jn. station and reach Kalka early next morning. From Kalka a taxi will take you to Shimla in three hours. 2. The time taken is answered above. I'm not aware of the current fare, but estimate it at Rs.1100/- or so for a full taxi. 3. You can return to Delhi by the same Kalka-Howrah Mail, which leaves Kalka late night and reaches Delhi early the next morning.

More on Shimla-Kalka travel...
Hi there Shimla -- Just wanted to thank you for your advice firstly.
We can't get onto the Kalka Mail train you mentioned but we're on the Kalka Shatbadi Saturday, arriving Kalka at around noontime and cabbing it up to Shimla where we have the rest of Saturday and all of Sunday. Not much time in Shimla but looking forward to it! Are we missing much by not taking a train from Kalka-Shimla? My husband thinks car trip will be equally thrilling, but I have heard so many good things about the train ride. Do you have any other suggestions on "must do" Shimla things, given our short amount of time? Will look at other threads, but, given your username thought you might also have some advice to share! Cheers, L ![]() |

Hi
Hi,
The Shatabdi arrives at Kalka at 12:00 Noon in the morning ... The ride to Shimla on the highway is approx 3hours ... The highway is good and picturesque ... However The train ride is a spectacle ... 103 tunnels ... 102 years old ... Amazing ride through some low lying valleys of the Shivaliks ... I think you can manage that ... the connecting train starts at 12:10 and reaches Shimla railway station at 5:30 PM .... When in Shimla a walk to The viceregal lodge and the state musuem are recommended .... The sunset from Jakhoo peak with a temple dedicated to Lord Hanuman is exquisite ... On a clear day after the rains the whole panorama of the Himalayan ranges is visible .... Other typical shimla things not to be missed are in order a) A stroll on the Mall after the office hours ie after 5 PM b) A glimpse of the coffee house and the old culture of Shimla c) The tea culture ... After 5 you will find that most places on the Mall are bubbling with office goers back and enjoying their cup of tea which is special ... d) Gulab Jamun at the Baljees e) Doing the forest road walk from the ridge to the Ramchandra square, coming down to the Barnes court and foloowing the Mall from there ... This is for you seem to have a lil time ... for other options and walks there is a post somewhere on the walks around shimla ... I am sure you will enjoy our town ... if you are able to miss the crowds .. Cheers, Dhananjay |
