Try PWD rest house at Narkanda, nice big rooms and cheaper also. Located at main chowk of narkanda. We stayed there in January this year and paid Rs.380 for a room for 3 persons. You will have to call PWD Kumarsain for the booking and the number is 01782240075. My picture at the PWD rest house at Narkanda-

Post Me too!

Waw.. What a coincident! I am Ashish too & I am from Mumbai as well. Trying to visit Kalpa, Sangla, Chitkul & Khab in April. Just me & my wife - want to spend some quiet, quality time, away from the buzzing metropolis. My plan is:
14 Apr:
Leave Mumbai by plane & reach Chandigarh by 2:00 pm. Take a car on hire. I hope to get that easily as this would be an off season. Plan to reach Narkanda by 6:30/7:00 pm & stay for a night. Read that PWD rest house is nice. Any other suggestion is welcome.
15 Apr:
Get up early & visit Hatu. After lunch leave for Kapla. pls suggest any "must see" places in route! Hope to reach Kapla by 7:00 pm. Is that achievable? Heard from many that HKTDC hotel at Kalpa is excellent. Plan to stay there for 3-4 nights.
16 Apr:
This day is for local sight seeing of Kapla. And since going with wife, shopping is a must.
17 Apr:
Leave early for Sangla Vally & Chitkul & back by evening. Want to have some fun in the snow. Hopefully we would find some snow in Chitkul in April. Or Am I being too hopeful?
18 Apr:
This day is for Spiti vally. Plan to go to Khab/Naco/Tabo & be back by night. Donno how far I can go in 1 day & be back. Not sure whether the roads would be open in April. Last time we were in Himachal, wanted to visit Keylong. But Rohtang was not open. Not yet visited Ladakh too, so desperate this time to visit the cold desert of Spiti. Need your suggestions.
19 Apr:
Leave early for journey back to Chandigarh. Can we make it before 7:00 pm in Chandigarh? or should I change the plan / drop some places so that we don't miss 8:20 pm plane back to Mumbai? Google Map says we can do this in 6 hrs, but I know that's not practical. Pls advice.
What do you think guys? Achievable / Too optimistic / enjoyable or not? pls pls pls provide your suggestions & expert comments to this typical townee.

Hoping to have a thrilling time & keeping my fingers crossed..
-Ashish.

Hi Ashish Well what a Coincidence. Your itinerary looks fine to me.

Hire a SUV (Scorpio or Xylo or Innova) from Chandigarh. Very important because quality of roads post Rampur demands it

Day 1 Your First Pit Stop rightly is Narkanda. Try to Gate Crash Narkanda Circuit House otherwise HPTDC's Hotel Hatu and The Wilderness (Home Stay) are good Options. Try to Avoid PWD Rest House location is n't great.

Day 2 Try to cover Sarahan enroute beautiful place if you can restrict your trip till Kinnaur only than try to stay @ Sarahan. Amazing view of Shrikhand Mahadev from HPTDC's Hotel Srikhand

After that Spend 2 Nights Each @ Kalpa and Sangla. In Kalpa HPTDC's Kinner Kailash is the Best Property for an Amazing View of Kinner Kailash. In Sangla Banjara Camps are a good option although on a higher side otherwise Rupin River View. Chitkul & Rakcham in Sangla Valley, Roghi Village near Kalpa are good places to explore and walk.

Not Sure if you should make it too hectic for yourself and try to cover Spiti. Also you should look to Pit Stop on return @ Shimla or Chail so that big return journey can be broken with a night halt at these places.

Anyways have a Fantastic Trip. Will complete my trip next Sunday so will be able to provide you other relevant inputs.

Cheers

Hey Ashish, how was ur trip? Details & Photos pls.
Our trip is postponed till mid June now. Hopefully Kunzum La is opened by that time so bit of plan change:
Day 1: Land in Chandigarh. Take a car on hire for 5 days. Night stay in Narkanda.
Day 2: Leave Narkanda in morning, Visit Hatu peak, Sarahan & reach Kalpa in the evening. Pls suggest if any "Must See" places en-route.
Day 3: Visit Sangla Vally, Chitkul & local sight seeing at Kalpa.
Day 4: Leave for Spiti vally. Travel as far as possible. Visit Nako / Chango / Tabo / Kaza / Kibber. Pls suggest which is better for night stay. From photos all places look similar & equally interesting..
Day 5: This day is for the Famous Kunzum La. Travelling further plan to cross Rohtang La & land in Manali / Kullu.
Day 6: Leave early in the morning & reach Chandigarh to catch evening flight back to the Maddening Mumbai
I know too much of travelling; but what to do! Did not get more leave from office . Hopefully travel would be hassle free. I know weather in the mountains is very unpredictable & if roads get blocked then they don't open for days. In such case would not have any choice but to return by the same route. Keeping my fingers crossed.

1. Any update on how is the location of PWD rest house in Narkanda? And how to book this accommodation? Do they take bookings through email?

2. Also, is there any Forest dept.'s rest house available there? If yes, how to book?

3. Same questions for Kumarsain.
