next time definitely stay there.

On which note, let me guess - you're Bengalis? They're the only folks who wud send someone walking a few km to procure fish (notwithstanding that your husband wanted to walk anyway).

This is too much - one of the most entertaining threads ever!

But what do you mean, hapless? Your begum sahiba says you wanted to go walking? Or were you just told that's what you wanted?
Anyway, it obviously must have been worth it, if the trout was the main topic of conversation for your f-i-l and you.

rolling,
You have been very liberal with your time-allocation for the road if you intend to hire your own car, as nayan has also indicated. Unless the above times include stops as well. Basically you can always work with 30 kmph for planning purposes in the hills - some roads will be faster, some slower. I'm giving some driving times (without stops and road-blocks):
Kalka-Shimla - 2.5 hrs
Shimla-Sarahan - 5 hrs
Sarahan-Sangla - 3 hrs
Sangla-Chhitkul - 1 hr
Sangla-Kalpa - 1.5 hrs
Kalpa-Tabo - 7.5 to 8 hrs
Kaza-Manali - 8 to 8.5 hrs

Drivers are often reluctant to go to chitkul later in the day because the glacier melt streams which cross the road become more of a problem as the day progresses. I donot know if this will be an issue in october...... may be not

Not. We were there around 25th Oct and it was no problem at all. Reached Chhitkul around 1.30 pm and left around 3-3.30 pm (after buying a sackful of the famed Chhitkul potatos - to cart to Delhi! Hey, some people go walking 2 hours for fish, I buy potatos and transport them 600 kms . But luckily I didn't have to walk with the sack ).

... sangla-chitkul-sangla(maybe for lunch)-kalpa will not be tiring...

Yes, that's quite realistic if one doesn't spend too much time in Chhitkul. That's what we did, except lunch was at Chhitkul and end-station was R/Pio (after a stop in Sangla on the way back, this time to buy a (2nd) carton of apples. Also to ship to Delhi ).

well I wanted to go for a walk, but what was initially described by hotel boys as a 30 mins walk one way, turned out to be 2-3 times over.....
also while coming back uphill from trout farm, i had a tough time managing the live fishes in a crude sack and gasping for breadth every 5 mins........
