overnight train : Saharanpur - Chakki bank on Jammu Tawi express
2140hrs to 0527hrs.

Then a car/taxi from Chakki Bank - Dharamsala 115km approx 2.5 hrs drive

Have you done this trip before Shivani? not sure if its the right way to go from Rishikesh

I've only ever gone by car via Shimla and the picturesque little town of Nahan. A very beautiful journey through forested isolated areas of HP. Then we crossed the boarder at Paonta Sahib, over the river Yamuna, into Uttarakhand.

Interesting option to go by train, but it seems like a huge detour, and you'll miss so much of the splendid scenery traveling by night!

I know but my time is so limited

Im trying to squeeze as much as I can into 2 weeks as possible. Overnight train trips are great for this.

Hi everyone.. I have just come to know that the temp in Dharamsala right now is about 6º. that's a bit cold for November... Shivani you seem to be a regular of Mcleodgunj.. can you give me some advise.. i am planning to do the YHAI Dalhousie trek in the first week of January.. how cold would it really be and what all do i need to carry.. your info on hotels of Dharamsala has answered by doubts regarding hotels but am still skeptical about the weather and other stuff (this is my first visit to Himachal)

It seems hard to get an accurate picture of the weather in Mcleod.

I'm aiming to go in January.

The impression I get is that the weather is like the mediterreanean winter - mild (around 15c shade temp)and sunny in the day, cold (around 0c) at night, with occasional snow or passing rain showers.

Is this correct - or is it generally overcast during the day, like a northern European winter, with a lot of rain, wind etc?

Also, is the weather warmer and sunnier down on the plain if I feel the need for a bit of sun?

I just don't know what clothes to pack! At the moment I'm thinking of taking:

Boots, Brasher leather hiking type
Boots, Clarks desert type
Cap, woolen
Fleece, midweight
Gloves, 'sealskin' waterproof woolen type
Parka, goretex shell waterproof
Pullover, woolen, midweight
Scarf, cotton scrim-net army issue
Scarf, woolen
Shirts, long sleeve cotton
Socks, wool, hiking type
Sports jacket, corduroy
Trousers, cotton chino type
Trousers, craghopper type
Underwear, long thermal

Is this enough or too much??
Any info welcome!
(sorry about the quartermaster style listing. I'm a bit obsessive about things like that...)

Fanofu2, it is not likely to snow in the next few weeks so no worries but do bring some warm things as it can be quite cool. Very occasionally it snows in mid to late December.
Austin you are right on target with your packing list. There is always a week or two in January or February where it dips to around 0c at night otherwise I have found the low to be around 9c which is cold enough when you have no central heating! McLlo bar/restaurant has heaters and is an especially popular gathering place during the cold snaps.
Most days will be Mediterranean with a few European ones thrown in for good measure.
Yes it is warmer on the plains. Often if I descend a few hundred metres to Dharamsala I notice a difference in the temp! if you just want a short weather break there is a pilgrimage site called Rewalsar (Tso Pema) which is really quite magical and is amazingly warm in winter. If you go don’t miss the sacred caves on the mountain top.
