McLeod Ganj hotels - contact details

Hi all

I'm just chasing up some contact details for some hotels in McLeod Ganj/Dharamsala - my LP is hopelessly out of date!

Snow Lion Guest House
Loling Guest House
Kalsang Guest House

... and please let me know if you wouldn't recommend these places in a million years! Always glad to hear a IM opinion!

Cheers
F.

Ok ok, if noone knows any contact details so that I can call those places and reserve a room, what do you all think about just turning up when I get there and trying to get a room in mid-January ... possible?

i cannot vouch for any of the hotels you've mentioned, but would say that you're pretty safe just showing up and getting a room unless the dalai lama is giving his teachings, which happened in Feb. of this year when i was there. it was impossible to find lodging which pushed me to the outer limits in Bhagsu, but that turned out to be a good thing for me.

lotus blossom - I think I remember from what I read on IM a while ago that the Dalai Lama is giving teachings in the south of India from January/February so I guess that means that Dharamsala will be relatively empty.
Shame, I would have loved to have seen him, but another time

Also watch out for Losar - Tibetan New Year - which is at the end of January and beginning of February in 2006. The town starts filling up beforehand.

Kalsang Guest House (221709)

That from here:

http://www.vegetarian-restaurants.ne...Dharamsala.htm

A brief mention of that place in the Rough Guide too (in directions to another guest house), but nothing of the others you mentioned that I could see.

Check this site : http://www.himachaltourism.nic.in/hotdir/hotkhoj.asp

Select District 'Kangra' and Place 'McleodGanj', you should be able to get contact details of most hotels here. Hope this helps.

Cheers - Arun

Cheers Arun - that's exactly what I was looking for!

I've also found info on that site that recommends only staying in Govt approved hotels during winter (god knows why?!), but the question is, how do you know if a hotel is 'government-approved', apart from asking them?!

'Excuse me sir, are you government approved?'
'Why yes madam, of course .. *wink* *wink* *twitch* *twitch*'

Don't want to be cynical, but wouldn't they all say it??

Kalachakra Postponed by two days
Phayul[Monday, October 31, 2005 18:57]

Dharamshala October 31 - The organizers of the 2006 Amaravati Kalachakra announced the postponement of the Kalachakra by two days. The religious sermon will begin on 5 January instead of the scheduled 3 January 2006.

The creation of Kalachakra mandala and offerings will be from 5 to 7 January. The preliminary teachings will begin on 8 January and last till 10 January 2006.

The actual initiation of the Kalachakra 2006 will be from 13 to 15 January 2006. A long life offering to His Holiness the Dalai Lama will be held on 16 January.

Tekhang Namgyal Wangdue, a member of the Kalachakra organizing committee, has told the Voice of Tibet radio service that the change in the timetable was a result of a change in the schedule of His Holiness the Dalai Lama.

Namgyal also said that the devotees who have not registered their names with the organizers may have to crave for the back seats in the teaching pavilion. The last date for registration of devotees has been extended to 30 November 2005.

So this answers my question (posted earlier with no reply), if His Holiness will be in Dharamshala when we are there (first half of January) -NO!

I googled about this Kalachakra and here is all the information:

www.kalachakra2006.com ,just in case somebody is interested.

Does anybody know how to get a hold of OM GUEST HOUSE in Mcleod Ganj?
I have about three different tel.-no.s. and none of them works..

thanks

Hallo Alexandra, wie geht's!?

If you got Om's contact details from the LP, then disregard this, but I've got (from the LP) this:
Ph: 221313
Email: omhotel@hotmail.com

When are you going to Dharamsala? If in winter, it might not even be necessary to book - this is low season for the mountains and from what I've heard on IM, you can just show up and find a room!

Hope this helps,

F.

hallo fresa81, danke gut!

thank you for the forwarded email of Om Guest house, but I tried that one already and got it back- undelivered..

right now we are still setting up our itinerary as we arrive in the middle of the night of New Years eve in Delhi!! (there was no other flight available)

we are planning to go to Chandigarh by train on January Day 4 (Jan.3, 2006)pickup by a driver, Citytour through Chandigarh, (designed by the French architect Le Corbusier); then on to Pragpur, Heritage village (1 night at "Judges Court" the Heritage Hotel)
Day 5 (Jan.4) from Pragpur to McLeod Ganj (distance 65km) Residence of His Holiness Dalai Lama (4 nights, 2xOm Guest House, 1xChonor House, 1xDip Tse-Chok Ling Gompa monastery)
- excursions: walking to Dharamshala and maybe to Amritsar, Golden Temple(?) rental car?
Day 9 (Jan.8) McLeod Ganj to Bikaner (Junagarh Fort and Tibetan Market) and on to round trip through Rajasthan until January 25, back to Delhi for National holiday before returning to Germany on January 29.

I know (now) it will not be crowded there, but we just want to make sure, that we get what we are looking for, because every hotel we chose is for a certain reason. I did intense research for 3 weeks on each and every website I could find...

Do you know, how to get a hold of this monastery in Mcleod Ganj and do you think they would accept 2 German ladies for guests? I could not find it out yet..

thank you
