hi Toby!

We did it a couple of weeks ago. We took the Himachal Roadways bus (book the night before) from Manali bus station at about 5 o'clock in the morning arriving in Kaza in the afternoon. Jeeps are also available. We didn't visit Chandertal Lake.

After obtaining our Inner Line Permit at Kaza (takes a few hours) and visiting Kibber village we again took the following day a Himachal Roadways bus to Tabo, a very unique monastery. If you're not going onward from Tabo you won't need an ILP.

Yes, it is a small world - we met indiamike member xthought and friend on the bus from Manali to Kaza.

Hallo,

Last October I was there. We were in Kaza , Kibber & Tabo. We hired a Tata Sumo (from Delhi) & started from Manali at 7 AM . Reached Kaza by 3PM. We did not went to Chandrataal (but heard worth seeing ).You can trek , (if you want ) you have to stay there ( on tent) if you visit the Chandrataal. It is very difficult to cover the entire journey in a single day (Starting from Manali early in the morning then visiy to chandrataal & back and then go to Kaza. ).Try to cross the Kunzum Pass as early as possible (within 1st week of October). If you go further ie Nako, Kalpa then confirm it from HP tourism local office whether road is open or not. Last year road was closed . We had to return Manali , kulu again to visit Kalpa (via Jalori Pass ).

The road south from Tabo is still broken beyond Chango, just before the turn-off to Nako, by a large landslip. Traffic cannot pass but they will send your luggage across in a wire cage. You then have to walk steeply down, cross the landslide at the bottom and walk back up to the road on the other side and pick up a bus or taxi. For anyone young and fit it's not a problem but for us unfit oldies it was quite exhausting. If you are going this way my advice is to reach the landslip as early as possible before it gets hot - this also means you can more easily arrange onward travel. For those who like to trek there is an old track from Yangthang village, a short distance from the landslip, to Nako.

A road is being blasted through above the landslip which will lead directly to Nako village and then onward to Khab and down the Sutlej Valley to Shimla. This should be finished late this year or early next year allowing people to complete a circular route Shimla - Manali - Shimla by vehicle next season, weather permitting.

Horse Trek to Spiti

In September/October 1996 I went on a 30 day horse trek from Manali over Hampta La to Chandratal on to Spiti. We visited Kibber, Kaza, Dhankar, and Tabo before going up the Pin Valley crossing Babajot to reach Wangtu on the Sutlej River. At Rampur we proceeded west crossing a low pass below treeline and finished at Aut.

The cost for the 6 horses was $27.00 per day or $810 for one month. That included the cost of two horsemen. I will take horse trekking any day over teahouse trekking. With horses you do not have to carry anything!

You can look and look until you go blind and you will NOT find Babajot on a map. Approaching Hampta La on our 3rd day of the trek we met a New Yorker who told us horses could cross Babajot. I pulled out Leomann Map sheet 5 and the New Yorker pointed to Tarikhango Pass at 31 degrees 47 minutes north and 78 degrees 0 minutes east. Until we met the New Yorker we had no idea how we would complete our trek. When in doubt, go! It will all work out.

The monasteries at Dhankar and Tabo are worth visiting. Kibber is an interesting village. You could rent horses in Kibber and start your trek there.
