Hi Folks,
The last two years I have vowed to wait till the correct season to visit India, then gone ahead and booked early trips in the August and September heat, due to itchy feet and ennui...

Again, old fool that I am, I am now wanting to go somewhere soon, and am considering Manali, as a place with potentially "reasonable" temperatures in June/July?

Any persons with advice on monsoon issues in Kulu / Manali area?

Any tips on economical places to stay would be a big help too. I am 65 this year, so not looking for "party central", but not averse to a few Rolling Stones tunes at low volumes.

Edwin.

You could check out for some options in Jagatsukh or Vashisht.

Not a bad choice. The rains would be there, but then so it would be elsewhere too.. Definitely off season, so rates would be rather low. Old Manali should be good or what Aarosh recommends. I think the agreement here is arrive and search, rather than prebook. Or prebook only for a day or two and then search.
I think Kullu Manali is a relatively low landslide zone, almost upto Gulaba. So that could help as well. The rains would be heavy and unpredictable though. I guess you can add that chapter in your India book - Monsoons in Manali.

Thanks for the replies.

Has anyone a reasonable guestimate of the extent of the moonsoon period in Manali area, both it's approximate duration and intensity?

I imagine in the south of India, it will be hot and steamy damp... Is it still warm and wet in Manali, or is it more cold and wet in June/July?

Thanks again.

I've been quite often in June.....some days wet, some dry. July and August are maybe worse, according to accounts.
Have also been in first half of September and found it pretty wet still.
But cold? No, not at all, unless it's really wet weather maybe.
I like it that season as the tourists are less by second half June, a lot of accommodation and cheap......especially Old Manali, but if you love the views of the snow peaks stay in Vaschist.
Manali proper is a mess of ugly hotels etc catering to the Indian visitors.......so head up the hill, in either direction....
