Smile Kinnaur Spiti road travel queries

Hello Himalyan Gypsy,

Saw your pics and indeed made me felt good too. Have been planning a trip on that circuit. Need to ask you a few questions.

1) How were the road conditions during your trip. Can you share what sectors were Worst, Bad, Average and Good amongst the sectors you have shared on the blog.
2) Was it raining during your trip?
3) Did during any part of the trip you or your partner faced AMS (heavy breathlessness)
4) Are taxis available from Delhi to do the entire lahaul spiti trip and back to delhi. If so, any possible cost indicators or car agecnies contacts?
5) Safety factor on the route you did (For familiy, ladies, quality of rest houses, sanitation)
6) Did you think you had enough time to do the stretch or you would like to recommend some inclusions /exclusions in the same itienrary done by you.?

Will appreciate if you can find time to respond to my queries.

Cheers
Hymz

Hi Hymz,

Your pointwise reply as under:
1. From Delhi to manali is great highway. Upto Ambala it is NH-1 and after that it is NH-21. From manali to rohtang it is average. But from gramphu to losar its really chalange for every driver. After losar to kaza there are some bad patches but throughout road is metaled.

2. Yes, we faced heavy rain from kiratpur to mandi. I was scared at some juction also, because its really tough to drive in hills during night and rain.

3.No, we have not faced any AMS.

4. Yes, you can hire taxis from delhi. Choose among, Scorpio, Travera, Innova, Qualis etc. Charges are 8-10 rs per km. (exclu. of driver allowances, toll tax etc.)

5. Safety is not an issue unless you care utmost.

6. Earlier our plan was to visit chandratal and keylong. But due to heavy landslide we could not make chandrataal trip. Instead we prefer thanedaar. Otherwise i would suggest keylong and udaipur.

Thanks for your time and answers. Have one more now after i read the last answer.
It seems you were pointing towards udaipur, which actually goes towards chamba via khajjar. Is that road open? I mean can i enter from chamba and go directly into Spiti valley without going through simla, manali or kinnaur? In short can i do Chakki bank (railhead near jammu)- chamba - khajjar -udaipur -tandi gramphoo-losar?

Would also ask other members to answer this one, if they have been that side.

Cheers

Thanks HimalayanGypsy & Avidtrekker.

Avidtrekker,:

The route chamba- Sach pass- udaipur -keylong is as lengthy as going through the chamba -dharmshala -mandi-kulu -manali -keylong. Doesnt help much actually.

I happened to encounter a tour offered by a Lahaul Tour operator. The route he suggests is bharmour -kilochi - triloknath - tandi -keylong of which the first two are trek and pony rides. Please check, ganajal.com/pictures/dharamsala_map.jpg

Any idea if their is a trek from Chamba - Brahmour - Tandi - Keylong or Chamba - Brahmour - barbhangal- manali. Just want to know. Have looked at posts around but none was clear and convincing. Think you have idea on this.?

Appreciate your help.

Cheers

Hymz

Question Whaaat??

Your post #'s 8 & 10 asks for a "road" situation... and now you are asking for trekking routes in your post # 13.

What is it you wish to do? Trek it or jeep it??

Route No 1 (Chamba Sach pass to Keylang) is approx 300 km. Average speed 30 km per hour means 10 hours.

Route No 2 (Chamba Mandi Manali Keylang) is approx 468 km. Average speed 40 km per hour means 12 hours.

Take your pick. Time taken to cover each km is greater via Sach Pass, coz of rugged terrain... but don't we holiday on unknown terrain?

Bharmour -- Kalicho Pass -- Trilokinath is a proper trek, if you are fit.. go ahead. After Trilokinath is jeep n bus road.

Bharmour -- Kugti Pass (5040m) -- Tandi is a frequented trek. Note the altitude of Kugti Pass.

Bharmour -- Bara Banghal -- Manali is done via many options (Pass crossings), but the most frequented is the Kali Heni Pass. (Others involve mountaineering equipment & skills.)
