Lahaul Spiti - Chandrataal Trip - June 2009

We are planning to visit the Lahaul Spiti with Kinnaur in June. The plan, we have chalked out so far is like following.

29th May – Start Kolkata (Kalka Mail)
31st May – Reach Chandigarh (3.15 AM) – Move to Shimla (Can We Move to Sarahan Directly???)
1st June – Shimla - Sarahan – Sangla (Stay) (Possible in One day???)
2nd June – Sangla – Chitkool – Sangla (Stay)
3rd June – Sangla – Kalpa (Stay)
4th June – Kalpa – Nako – Tabo – Kaza (Stay) (Possible In One Day???)
5th June – Kaza – Key Monastry, Kibber – Kaza (Stay)
6th June – Kaza (Stay) (Pin Valley) (Anything Other ???)
7th June – Kaza – Chandrataal – Keylong (Stay) (Feasible???)
8th June – Keylong – Udaypur – Triloknath – Keylong (Stay)
9th June – Keylong – Suraj Taal – Keylong (Stay)
10th June – Keylong – Rothang Pass – Manali (Stay)
11th june – Manali – Shimla (Stay)
12th June – Shimla – Kalka\Chandigarh

Please have a look into our travel plan and suggest any modification, if required.
We have tried this in last November. But few road was close at that time.

One more thing: We will reach Chandigarh by 3.15 AM. At that time will there be any communication (taxi Preferable) to Shimla?

If anybody is having any Kinnuar – Lahaul - Spiti tour operator phone no, please specify.

yes possible. it takes around 5 hours from shimla to sarahan at a leisurely pace. if you start around 3:30 am to 4am from chandigarh, you will reach sarahan comfortably by afternoon.


Both are possible but its better you stay in sarahan the first night instead of staying in shimla. sarahan to sangla is a 4 hrs journey.
kalpa to kaza is about 8-9 hrs and perfectly possible in a day(assuming no roadblocks in malling etc)

dhankar, komic?


I assume you will have a vehicle prearranged for your tour. In that case that vehicle will be waiting for you at chandigarh.

Yes,you can ... you need to start very early by 4 - 5 AM . You also need to prearrange Taxi if you intend to do this.
Yes.But it'll be better to stay at Kalpa.
Possible ,you should consider staying at Tabo .
Yes ,I've done this during my bike trip.Doable depending on Kunzum la pass position during that period.

@Nayan - I have read your trip report. Very good synopsis of your trip. As Chandigarh - Sarahan is 5 hours Journey, i think if we start by 5-6 we will be there by 12.

I think you also are suggesting me to stay at Sarahan, not Kalpa.

Can you please give more detail about Kaza - Chandrataal - Keylong trip? Is the road upto chandrataal motorable?

For Kalpa - Kaza, if we stay at Tabo, can we cover Pin Valley, dhankar during Tabo to Kaza trip? Actually we have allocated max 2 full days - 3 nights at Kaza.

just a point - i said shimla to sarahan was 5 hrs and not chandigarh to sarahan. As far as I remember chandigarh to shimla is around 3 hrs.
so chandigarh to sarahan will be around 8hrs.

Accomodation options are more at Kaza. I would suggest you stay at kaza and cover tabo, kye, kibber, pin valley etc as day trips.

Hi! You can stay confortably at Tabo,just a tag more expensive than Kaza,and on the way to the Spiti headquarters visit Dankhar,Lalung and possibly the Pin valley,at least Kungri and its old gompa should be possible.So you avoid backtracking and extra kms.From Kaza easily you can go to all the villages high in the pastures. Kaza to Batal is around 90 KM (Kaza - Losar - Batal). If I remember correctly Batal to Chandratal is 13.5 KM out of that 12.5 KM road is motorable.
Nayan is right,Kaza has more accommodation options but you need to backtrack for Pin valley,Dhankar,Lalung from Kaza , also road between Kalpa - Tabo (170 KM) passes through landslide prone area.Hence considering that I suggested you to halt at Tabo.

Is possible in One day???

Kyelong to Udaipur - Kyelong is around 100 Kms to & fro(i.e arnd 4 Hours ride). Then Kyelong to Rohtang top is around 80 Kms (4 Hours)
Further Rohtang to Manali is 52 Kms (generally 21/2 hours)
if you ask me not adviceable
